Bob Valvano on officiating...

Said today if you think any referee has an agenda you are wrong. Said there superiors would see right through it. Basically acted as though it was impossible that a ref would do anything to intentionally disadvantage a team. I say complete BS
Speaking of superiors. There were a number of serious people on social media that commented it appeared the refs were told to clean it up based on the second half vs. the first half calls during the 2nd half.

Tom Leach was so bold as to say this on his show Monday morning, as well.

Naw, refs are sacred cows...none of them would EVER have an agenda.

National pundits, THAT HATE UK, were calling him out Valvano. How many times do you see that many people in the media openly questioning a ref

Valvano is a buffoon

Too many games too many officials to say that with a blanket statement. Truthfully, I think most officials are solid with the best intentions of going out and doing a good job. They are human and make mistakes. However, you have some that gamble, some that fall into naritives and storylines before the game, and some that don't like certain coaches.

You like everybody at work? Some people you go out of your way to help and some you let flap in then breeze when they are out there on their own.

I was home today, so I heard Valvano. I actually called Jason Anderson's show, and argued with him for a few minutes. He refused to budge - he and Valvano and the others simply think it's impossible that a particular official might be biased, or carry a grudge. Can't happen.

Side note: hard to argue with someone on the radio - they have control of the buttons!

I think officials can hold a grudge for a while before being found out...this might be Higgins' moment of truth. Most officials want to do a good job. It's a very difficult game to officiate, particularly at that level and on that big of a stage. He has proven, for whatever reason, that he just isn't up to it. Nor were his partners.

Interesting. I thought Curtis Shaw had an anti-UK agenda when he reffed the UK-WVU game in 2010 just prior to his retirement.

And I think that John Higgins has an anti-UK agenda.

Want to take a guess who Higgins' supervisor is?

Tell him Tim Donaghy got away with it for years. Bob has an inflated opinion of how much he knows. If his name were sqatchamoli he'd be just another hack sitting at the end of the bar, spilling his 10th beer all down his shorts. His opinion means dogshit to me.

Oh, human bias is impossible? Human emotion doesn't exist? They don't have people they like and dislike?

They don't pick and choose when to call hard fouls and cheap fouls? Eff off with that garbage.

I heard that and it got me so fired up, I put on a Slip Knot CD and I drove 90 miles an hour through neighborhoods and winding roads, hitting trash cans and mail boxes so I could get to the nearest Speedway. I ran inside and threw down 12 Red Bulls crushing each can on my forehead and chewed a full can of skoal just to get my blood flowing. Once I got the juices flowing and with dip juice running down my chin I started punching everyone in the store who even looked like they knew who Bob Valvano was. Screaming at the top of my lungs that Higgins f***** us once not twice but multiple times. I ran back to my car, sweating like a pig at a BBQ festival, I started firing off a series of texts telling him what a POS he was and how bad he sucked..I then composed myself and went on about my day.

Higgins before the frost when he reffed jr. high.

Somebody put together a nice video of the last game's several missed calls....Its sickening to watch. Yeah, Valvano has a point......is it valid??? Not All The Time.

Wow disappointed that Jason is so narrow-minded on this as well.

I think they are human .... and have biases and emotions that sometimes bleed into their job.
I don't think there is a conspiracy or overt agenda.
I guess that puts me in the middle.

I don't think anyone is alleging a conspiracy. We're talking about one guy.

I don't know if there's a meaningful difference between a bias that impacts performance, on one hand, and an overt agenda, on the other. I think you end up in the same place.

A former D-1 ref told me one time that it was impossible for a ref to be bribed because of all the precautions in place. When a ref in the NBA was exposed for being bribed, he admitted that he was wrong.

So Valvano basically saying we are naive about knowing basketball and he knows the minds of all refs. What, just plain stupid? Or is he serious?

Conspiracy has been implied many times on this board. If you say we always or most of the time we get a bad whistle then that certainly points to conspiracy.

I think there is a difference between a guy who goes into a game thinking, "I'm gonna make sure uk loses today" and one who plans to officiate fairly, but is impeded... to some degree .... by his biases.

Bob Valvano is a complete moron..Total failure as a head coach at Bellarmine and lucked into a TV job because of his brother's name..Take anything he says with a grain of sea salt..He is a complete idiot.

I don't think they pick a side as much as they are incredibly non consistent and decide to focus on too much non sense. That's why NBA level refs are so much better....they arent wasting time calling some obscure hold that has no bearing on the play, and they don't come out and dictate everything about the game, or decide to call it tight or change at half.

No matter how wrong a ref is very seldom the other refs try to change his call.
Even the ones who are honest eat from the same bowl of soup.
