Best coaching moment by each Kentucky coach

Gillespie's best moment was running away from Allen Cutler. Either that or signing Vinny Zollo.

Of the coaches I've seen:
Tub y'all was 1998- beating Duke and winning the NC that year.

BCG's best moment was getting fired.

Cal: 2012 NC and reviving the program in 2010

Joe B Hall - NC in 1978 against Duke

1st Runner up - NCAA tournament upset of IU

2nd Runner up - 1985 upset of UNLV in the tournament

I wasn't really around for Joe B, so I can't say much on that. Sutton can go pound sand.

Rick Pitino: the Unforgettables season. That team had no business doing any of the things it did, really.

Tubby: 1998 comeback versus Duke. Finally, REVENGEEEEE.

BCG: Getting Patrick Patterson is about all I can think of. I don't know if that counts as "coaching" but there's not a lot to pick from.

Cal: Tie - 2011 Final Four run and 2014 Final Four run. Neither of those teams had any business in the Final Four, and yet they made it. Ohio State, UNC, Wichita St, Louisville, Michigan and Wisconsin are better tourney wins than most coaches have in a lifetime.

Cal- For me, the Brandon Knight/ S16 Ohio State Game/UofL Final 4 (NC year).

Tubby- Duke 98, or 2003 halftime against TN, where Tubby hit the punching bag and the team ended up going 16-0

BSG- It never happened.

Maybe not his best coaching moment overall, but tubby ran a play to Chuck Hayes against LSU in the SEC semi final that was a thing of beauty.

BCG actually had a few good play calls... We just don't remember them because they didnt happen often or count. I remember against Tennessee when Jodie went for 54 he had Patterson fake the handoff to Meeks and both UT defenders went with Meeks leaving Patterson a wide open lane and a throw down.
He also drew up a nice play against UGA where Bradley took a charge on an inbound pass, but the refs let it go.

Cal's best moments are convincing insert here to come play for UK.

Billy Gillispie's best coaching moment had to be telling Perry Stevenson to goaltend the free throw. Looking back it was freaking hilarious.

Without a doubt the best BCG moment was signing Patrick Patterson. There really weren't many other highlights at all of his time.
Pitino - 96 National Championship with the miracle comeback at LSU a close second.
Tubby - 98 National Championship
Sutton- 32-4 his first year.

Joe B Hall - NC in 1978 against Duke

1st Runner up - NCAA tournament upset of IU

2nd Runner up - 1985 upset of UNLV in the tournament
By far Coach Hall's best move was the '78 NCAA game against Florida State. Benched the starters at the start of the 2nd half after a dismal 1st half showing. Without that move...we may not have won the '78 Championship. A move that more coaches should try when they're not getting the play expected of their starters.

Hall: '78 NCAAT with Goose/Robey/Phillips/Lee/Macy
Sutton: '86 blowout of UL at Cheat'em Hall. King Rex goes for 26.
Pitino: going .500 in his first season with a bunch of nobodies.
Tubby: '98 NCAAT Duke game coming back from double figure deficit in the 2nd half.
BCG: his memories of Bill Keightley at his memorial service.
Cal: '12 NCAAT

OC, I have always thought that was one of the dumbest moves in history. I know that Coach K has done it too and it has worked, just like it did for us in 78. Maybe you are right and we go on to lose if we don't do that but that move still scares the heck out of me.

BTW, do you recall how long he left the bench in that game before he put the starters back in?

Don't recall. I think they were in for more time than folks think. I just remember them giving 110% effort especially on defense to the point that FSU starting wearing down. Here's the box score, so you can tell based on everybody's minutes that they played more than the first minute of the 2nd half in order for Coach Hall to make a point.
And I agree with you...I've seen the move of benching starters not work too. But if I was a coach, and my starters weren't giving the effort we needed, I would do it. But it does sound a little Billy Clydish doesn't it?

Tubby = Elite 8 win vs. Duke
Gillespie = losing the Georgia game on senior night. Ensured that he was gonna be kicked to the curb.
Cal = Sweet 16 win vs. Louisville. I still don't know how we won that game. Down 66-59 with 3 minutes left and we go on a 15-3 run to close it out. It was beautiful.

The winning of the national championship game was the best moment or moments for each coach. The others had no good moments.
I don't remember too much about Rupp....I remember 66 ...then the rest were sorta declining years.
Hall's greatest minute was against IU in 76 I believe
Sutton....I think once he was sober
Pitino the game we lost to Duke on the Latener shot...he blew it at the end but we should have never even been close to that Duke team.
Tubby---Duke 98
BCG.....hmmmmm...."a bad question"
Cal....2012 game with OSU

Beat me to it. Watched that game a few months ago, FSU was a very solid team. Certainly a WTF is he thinking when it happened.

Rupp: Rupp's Runts
Hall: '75 tourney upset of undefeated IU, '78 title
Sutton: His first team
Pitino: Unforgettables, '96 title
Tubby: Elite 8 comeback over Duke. title
BCG: None
Cal: His first UK team, '11 FF run, '14 FF run, '12 title

Rupp - Winning it with the Fiddlin' Five in 1958.
Hall -- Outcoaching Bobby Knight and winning the 1975 Regional Final over Indiana.
Sutton -- Dubbing Louisville 'Little Brother' and thrashing them in Chapman's first year.
Pitino -- The Duke Regional Final in 1992.
Smith -- Outcoaching Mike K and beating Duke in the Regional Final in 1998.
Gillispie -- Going 12-4 in the SEC in 2008 after Patrick Patterson was injured; to pick an including game, beating heavily favored #3 Tennessee.
Calipari -- Outcoaching Dean Smith and beating UNC-Cheats in the 2011 Regional Finals.
Ummm....Dean Smith was not the UNC coach. Roy Williams was/is.

tubby really got the most out of that hayes/fitch/daniels crew in 03 and 04 imo. they were a joy to watch most of the time, though not really as talented as a kentucky roster should be

i thought cal's best moment was "i hope you lose" at lsu last year. i don't even know why. i thought i was going to stroke out each close game and he doesn't give a f

You all have named many great seasons or teams by all the coaches. I have seen zillions I think but one of the best just in terms of doing more than anyone ever expected occurred on February 15, 1990. LSU came to town with Shaq, Chris Jackson and Stanley Roberts another pretty good 7 footer and UK beat them 100-95 if memory serves me. No way we should have hung with that bunch, but we did. One the great upsets.

Pitino - 31 pt comeback on the road
Tubby - E8 vs Duke (or the whole 98 comeback cats)
BCG - tipped me $10 once at Murrays
Cal - OSU 2011 or Wisconsin 2014 (look who was playing that first half)

When I was reading the responses from everyone, I was going to post this very same thing. To this day, the best move of any UK coach in my eyes that I remembered.
Joe B. did what needed to be done that day.
Right on Colonel

Joe Crawford and Ramel Bradley's senior night against Florida was a good moment. Then them getting up and speaking after the game was nice. As far as Gillispie goes that was his finest on court moment here.

Rupp was aided by a late night visit in the Kentucky Hotel by the Idaho Coach who had defeated Seattle that season.Rupp had helped him as a young man.He brought a 16mm film that showed that Elgin Baylor could not let players drive by him.Rupp got a projector and showed the team the film. The next day Rupp had John Crigler drive on Baylor. He had 3 fouls by halftime..UK won going away as Johnny Cox had 30 points. The Fiddlin Five won the Title and were Carnegie Hall Fiddlers..

during the 86 game I was privleged to be on the UK bench (thanks Eddie) and Rex was hotter than a pistol..Eddie was soused..That was the famous Little Brother game..Cawood said "Rex hit that one from the Watterson Expressway"

Any coach that has won a title....well that is their best moment.

As for BCG, hell I guess an NIT win at home over UNLV in Memorial?
