Being A BIG BOY...

Mumme was able to lose a lot of games 48-45. Basketball on grass is fun to watch but doesn’t always win a lot of games.
You speak the inconvenient truth. LSU scored 30 points tonight and still got blown out by 3 scores. Anyone who watched both games and understands anything about football knows that UK played GA tougher than LSU did. Scoring points is important, and that is why UK is looking for another OC now. But if your defense can't control the line of scrimmage and cover in the secondary, you will get beat in the SEC regardless of how many points you score. There are three phases to the game, and you need to be sound alI three. This season, UK was sound defensively. There is a reason why Stoops will hire a new OC and bring in a special teams coach. He is always trying as hard as he can to improve our football program.

Everyone wants to make it sound so simple to be an SEC football coach. It isn't. No one on this board would last 24 hours in the job. Coaching competitive sports at the highest levels is difficult and results are seldom perfect, regardless of which coach or which school we are discussing. Players come and go. Players get hurt. Players succeed and fail. Everywhere. Stoops has earned our respect. People who discuss or treat Stoops disrespectfully are only telling on themselves.

31, 43,45,45, 47, 50...like I said, Big Boy fb 2022. You can live in the past , but it's not the present...just because Stoops is looking for "another" OC doesn't mean he will change HIS philosophy.

What you guys actually want is to win. Period. Show me someone who would rather lose a fun game than win a boring one and I’ll show you a loser.

Your offense and defense have to shake hands. You want to know why those air raid teams have shitty defenses? It’s because their D is always on the field. If you build a defensive base for your team as stoops has done then the ideal offense is a pro style. Now whether it’s a run heavy or pass heavy offense depends on your personnel.

Good grief man...it's about scoring points!!! What part of that are you missing ? Low scoring teams are not winning BIG going into the future. I just gave you scores from this weeks CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES.

You can play winning football with any scheme as long as your players are good and the game plan and execution is there. You cherry picked some scores. That’s great. Truth is Kentucky isn’t as good as those teams you chose to point out.

Btw it’s not about scoring points. It’s about scoring more than your opponent. Y’all want to act like it’s so easy win championships. Just score a ton right? How did it work out for Tennessee? How about all those Oklahoma teams that get murdered at the end of the year? Where is Oklahoma state’s championship? Mississippi state sucks and they are all in on the air raid.

Nobody here wants to have a pedestrian offense and this season was disappointing. The injury bug killer our QB and our OC was a weirdo. But we tried the air raid here before, multiple times. Even under stoops. The shit didn’t work. Kentucky’s best success has come with a pro style offense and a stout defense. Why does everyone want to go back and try shit that has never worked here?

You know what is missing in those scores you listed? Defense. That’s why they point totals are so high. You don’t win an award for scoring a bunch of points. Just win the game.

The greatest coach of all time, Nick Saban, realized the game is changing and he opened his offense up and now they score 40 every game. His defense has suffered some because of it but if you're scoring 40 and giving up 25, who cares.

UT has turned their program around by having the best offense in college football and their defense is terrible (even though we scored a measly 6 points, BARF).

Heck, look at the top 25. Ga, Michigan, OSU, TCU, USC, Bama, UT, FSU, Oregon, UCLA, Texas, UNC, MSU. All of these teams have high powered offenses. Look at Texas A&M, who plays similarly to us on offense, Pro Style and methodical, and they struggled to win any games this year with top 5 talent.

Stoops has largely neglected his offense the whole time he's been here, minus parts of 2016 and 2021. He has also neglected Special Teams, which makes no sense since he likes to play rock fights and the games are usually close. The defense is very good but they can't pitch shut outs, especially against any team with a pulse on offense. Stoops needs to change his philosophy of "complementary offense" and hire a competent ST coach if we want to remain competitive. Otherwise, it's only a matter of time before we're back in the cellar.

This keeps getting repeated yet it isn't true despite the fact I know he said it. He said what it took to help their recruiting at the time.

Riddle me this - which version of bama was more dominant? The defensive ground and pound? Or the passing oriented attack? It's clearly the former.

Whatever we run and whomever we hire, physicality is required to win games. Physicality doesn't miss throws, doesn't get bothered by weather or crowd noise, and it mentally defeats your opponent. Of course you need to compliment that as well, but that's where everything needs to start.

So Stoops literally just said "complementary football" a few weeks ago when we lost to Vandy at home and he said it to help with recruiting? How would that help with recruiting? If anything, it seems that statement would hurt recruiting. What HS star would want to play in a such a slow, methodical, boring style of offense? Apparently not many because we have no QB or RB committed and we're tring to steal commits from Buffalo now because it's late in the game and we're desperate. We should have two or three stud RB's committed or already on the team the way we have run the ball the last several years and yet, we have no obvious replacements.

Regarding Bama, yes they were more dominant a few years ago when they were ground and pound but I think that's because the SEC was much weaker then than now. Georgia was not very good under Richt and struggled at first under Kirby. UT and OM sucked. UF, Auburn, TxAM, LSU, MSU were up and down. It was much easier to win the SEC and get in the Playoffs or BCS back then.

When stoops says "complimentary football" he means slow it down to rest the d.

The sec was t weaker then, there were just different teams at the top. Florida was as good as anyone in the country many times. Then beyond that, bama just embarrassed and dominated whomever they played in the national title.

Alabama started landing elite QB’s after winning titles with a bunch of Game Manager types. Georgia is basically now what Alabama was when they started their run under Saban.

It will be interesting to see if an offensive minded team like UT under Huepal will change the game once again landing elite level talent.

I did not cherry pick anything !! We are talking about playing BIG BOY fb. Yesterday was Championship Saturday and I gave you the scores of the teams that WON the games. I AM NOT TALKING AIR RAID OFFENSE! The scores of the reams that lost was 30, 22,28,24. All those scores would probably have beaten UK. It most certainly is about scoring points!!!

UK lost 5 games this year and in those 5 losses we scored a GRAND TOTAL of SIXTY SIX pts or an average 13.1 ppg. Puke orange scored that many on us in one game...Like I said, NOBODY is talking air raid! It's about schemes , philosophy and playing much faster than we play, and despite what you think, it's 2022 and SCORING MATTERS. Stoops now is being paid a BIG BOY salary and it's TEN years into his tenure. You wanna play for championships, you better hope he changes his philosophy or he'll never come close.

So you are accusing me of living in the past? LOL! Let's go back and spell out what I said. Your team must be sound in all three phases. Our team is sound defensively. Stoops is hiring a new OC and a special teams coach because UK was not sound offensively or on special teams this season. I have been saying this consistently since our special teams blew the Ole Miss game.

Back when Shannon Dawson was trying to go uptempo, it was fair to conclude that Stoops was keeping the tempo slower to rest his defense. That was nearly a decade ago. Back then, UK had no defensive depth. Since then, to his credit, Stoops has rebuilt UK's roster. Our DL is now three deep with good players.

Can you see, or not, that Liam Coen and Rich Scangarello each installed their own versions of zone offense? Did you see, or not, that Coen and Scangarello both went uptempo at times during the last two seasons? Maybe you are living in the past?

Nothing is wrong with a head coach overruling a coordinator. That is the head coach's job. Saban and Smart do it, although both have defensive backgrounds. When Stoops does it, you sound like he did something wrong. Stoops gives his coordinators latitude to do their jobs. Occasionally, Stoops does his job by taking responsibility for calling a big play. That is what head coaches do.

All of us regret that UK didn't go 12-0, and that Levis got hurt. I was asked here several weeks ago if Scangarello should be replaced, and I said yes. That did not require brilliance. I think Stoops made the mistake of not taking the Scangarello hire seriously enough. He was going for Coen 2.0, but that isn't what he got. Stoops is not perfect, but he is (after all) the winningest coach in UK football history. That counts for a lot, unless you cannot balance good with bad. We are 7-5. I remember when some people on this board were saying 7-5 is UK's ceiling. I appreciate that Stoops has disproven that. Stoops developed Brad White as our DC. Stoops has developed seven All Americans at UK and has put more Wildcats in the NFL than the four previous coaches combined. Stoops opened up OH in our recruiting program. Stoops beat PA St, and then IA, in the Citrus Bowl, demonstrating our superiority over a couple of top B10 teams. Stoops is our coach, and he is not going anywhere, thank goodness.

We are never gonna score enough here to win anything that matters. Our fans are ok with 7 and 5 with a couple of 9 and 3 seasons sprinkled in every decade. The most drama there will ever be on here is why did UK only rank 15th in the final playoff rankings when we are SEC. 9 and 3 at UK is probably never making a 12 team playoff. We won't ever win the SEC either so in my mind we need to change the strategy a little and to the OPs point of actually trying to score on offense would help.

People on here pointing to the UGA game as proof we can climb up with just a defensive mentality are delusional. Georgia didn't give a crap about that game and knew Stoops wouldn't try to score so was no point in risking anything. Ugas d us embarrassed they gave up 6 points but otherwise the game went to their plan. Uga knows when they have to show up and play hard on offense and it wasn't against uk.

No, he doesn't. SECCats was one of the posters who insisted for several years that Barnhart should have hired Bob Petrino instead of Stoops. Even now, he still never misses an opportunity to slam Stoops. When we win, he usually disappears back into the woodwork. You just have to allow him to have his occasional moments of joy when we lose or when there is some kind of trouble. Otherwise he will call you bad names, accuse you of multiple personalities, and threaten to find you and beat you up. I'm not kidding.

I remember the Mumme era well. Our defense in those days was worse, if that's even possible, than our special teams are now. Claude Bassett was paying off prospects and their hs coaches, and he got caught. Our athletics department didn't recover from the NCAA sanctions until several years into the Rich Brooks era, by which time we had burned through CM Newton and Larry Ivey. Even with the benefit of cheating, Mumme and Bassett were terrible recruiters. Our football program is so much stronger and better now, even if some people may not have figured that out yet.

Have to shout sometimes so people will listen and you evidently are not listening to Stoops if you think his philosophy is not the main obstacle in UK becoming a challenger in the SEC.. if you are blinded by your loyalty I don't know what to tell you. And before you question my loyalty...for the last 35+ years I've been a STH and in the last 10 yrs only missing a couple of road games . Philosophy , schemes and tempo are a major problem whether you believe it or not.

So what was the obstacle the 60 years before Stoops’ philosophy was since that’s the main one?
