I knew Van very well. I remember him calling me, to check on my wife, when we first found out she had melanoma, even though he was in bad health. Spoke with him, the last time, a couple of months ago, and he was not doing well. Most don't realize how much health problems he had, over the years, because he never complained. If I am not mistaken, I think he had almost 30 surgeries, over the years. He was tough as a pine knot, and he loved the Cats. He was with Mr. Keightly, at the Reds game, when Mr Keightly died of the heart attack. He was the face of the Committee of 101, for many years. I watched the replay of the comeback in Baton Rouge, on SEC rewind, and you can see Van right behind the bench.
