No offense but no need to pile on right now. I’m sure both coaches would love for all of the athletic teams to be successful, it only helps draw recruits and makes being a student and fan a lot more fun

You realize it was dumb to say then. The comment was made in the context of facilities. Cal was saying basketball should have priority over football due to its history. Anyone with a business mind knows you need to build up football—and everything else is gravy.

Not at all, that is just how people who didn't understand what he was saying interpreted it. Cal was and always has been complimentary of UK football and atheltics as a whole. He has been very encouraging of improving facilities for all sports. He was just simply saying basketball needs can't be forgotten in the process. Particularly considering basketball is our premier sport. It's what UK athletics, and really UK in general, is known for. There's nothing wrong about saying that either. It's neither untrue or dumb. UK is a basketball school.

I got blasted before this game for trying to point out this team was overrated. But, fans like you were too busy with your blue tinted glasses dreaming of an undefeated season. Not trying to put anyone against each other but our fans need to be realistic! I said before the season, this was an 8-4 team, but I was assuming a win against USCjr. Now it’s looking more like 7-5.
No one reasonable is pitting them against each other. There isn't honestly a comparison. UK Basketball is considered one of the greatest programs of all time. UK football has traditionally been an SEC bottom feeder with very little success. We can want football to be great while also admitting basketball has historically been the premier sport at UK and still is. We can be honest that we have improved a lot under Stoops but are still no where near a "football school". It seems far more stupid to deny the obvious reality or to pretend it impacted the fball program in anyway.

I have a feeling Cal will completely take back over the campus. No way the basketball team will have a 500 type season this year like football is getting ready to have. Stoops has done a great job building up a bad program but he is not a conference championship level coach. We will never have a better than 3 loss season. A lot of fans will be okay with being 6-6 at bottom and 9-3 in our luckier years but a lot of these wins are because our schedule is more manageable than ever. With UofL and Vandy being so bad we are almost guaranteed 5 wins before season starts.
Cal hasn’t been relevant since Anthony Davis saved his ass winning the NC. He couldn’t win it with the Wall/Cousins team or the dream team which a blind mouse could win with. Stoops 10-3 seasons are better than what Cal is doing.
UK Football brings in MORE money than UK Basketball. NCAA Football is the most popular college sport. UK Basketball has the MOST tradition of ANY other college basketball program. Cal knows this, everyone knows this.
BUT, to say it in an interview with UK media when our football coaches are CONSTANTLY fighting to get recruits from other schools that tell them that UK is a "basketball school", tears down our football program.
If you are TOO short sighted to see that, I can't rationally argue about it. It was WRONG and Cal KNEW EXACTLY what he was doing when he said it!!! He was PISSED at Mitch because he had approved for a NEW indoor football training facility and told Cal NO to his. Cal took it to the media to try and get support from the fans by BROADCASTING the UK is a "basketball school". It was a LOW BLOW to Coach Stoops ANY WAY you look at it and it did HARM to our football program!!!

You're arguing two different things. Football is traditionally more popular and does generate more revenue. They also cost substantially more to operate as a sport. However, that in no way negates the fact that we are indeed a basketball school with a rich basketball tradition. UK fans breath, eat, and sleep with UK basketball on the brain. They have championship expectations almost annually. They allow minor losses to ruin their moods and days, and they have little to no patience for not meeting those expectations.
UK football is not the same. There, we just long to be competitive. We are okay with mediocre bowls and average records so long as we aren't awful. We are willing to be patient with coaches. We don't have lofty expectations of conference or national titles. We have fans literally willing to build Stoops a statue simply because he has the most wins at UK, even though he is also the longest serving coach. However, once basketball starts, football becomes a lot less popular. After yesterday, we likely don't sell out another football game all season. A lot of people won't pay attention again until bowl season. That's not the behavior of football schools.
There is nothing shortsighted about admitting that or calling UK a basketball school. We are! It's far more irrational to be afriad or hurt by reality.
Lol, what harm did it do? What has it cost us? Who didn't realistically know UK is a basketball school? Please, provide us with some evidence instead of just emotional reactions.
The football coaches reaction to it answers ALL of your questions!! They were VERY unhappy with Cal about it and SHOULD have been. It HURTS recruiting against other schools that use that VERY SAME LINE against UK Football!!

Lol, the best you have is that other coaches, who have long claimed UK is a basketball school, will tell recruits UK's basketball coach thinks they are a basketball school, too. Like that's some completely shocking belief a basketball coach would have, particularly at one of the top basketball programs of all time. 🤣

I forgot that we celebrate 3rd and 4th place SEC finishes in football.lol How manny SEC titles has Stoops won? Cal has won 4 since stoops has been here. Stoops has completely shit the bed with a team loaded with NFL talent. It’s week 6 and our season is over. This team looks unprepared and confused and that’s on coaches.
No, because UK is MUCH MORE than just a "basketball school". We are making strides with our football program and taking it to levels not seen here in a LONG time. You KNOW that, Cal KNOWS that. But having the premiere basketball program's coach use his position to try and strong arm the AD at the EXPENSE of the football program that is working HARD to compete with other elite football program's, is WRONG!!!!
This goes WAY BEYOND "emotions"!!! It is the "truth" that the coach of the greatest college basketball program felt the need to use that moniker to throw a tantrum to get his way. It FAILED miserably!! there is no "locgical" explanation for being SOOOO egotistical that you would not see how your comments wouldn't HARM the football program.
Especially when you just came off of a LOSING season followed by a loss to a school NO ONE has heard of until YOU lost to them in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament despite having the National Player of the Year on YOUR team.

Again, it is apparent that this is all very emotional for you and is blocking your ability to have a rational and logical discussion. Cal was 100% right. We are and have long been a basketball school. If Stoops would like to change that well-known perception, then he needs to go out and win to a degree that changes those perceptions. It's not Cal or anyone else's job to create the narrative for him.
Can you name me a basketball program or coach that hasn't had bad losses or been knocked out of the NCAA tournament early? Or one that never had a bad season?
There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging of our basketball success. We have it, but we need football to do well—and the ability to recruit quality players.
I agree, but Stoops and co have already been recruiting pretty good in spite of the fact we're a basketball school being used against him. Kids don't know or care about that crap. These days, it's about how much NIL money they can make and how fast they can get to the league by attending a given school. Schools and coaches that can get them paid and to the league fastest will get the commitment. Cal saying UK is a basketball school isn't going to register with football recruits in today's world of recruiting.
I can say for a fact that Johnny Majors used the “basketball school” angle to take recruits away. He would ask potential candidates to tour both schools, but then go look where the basketball team stays.
Administrations of the past really did football no favors
We are not a football wchool , Al and Ga are football schools . We are a Basketball because of our success
I actually Blame Cal for this with all the distractions he caused this summer bc his ego couldn’t take not being the top dog!
