Bam Adebayo, De’Aaron Fox, and Malik Monk in ESPN’s Top 8 player rankings

Kind of surprised Giles didn't drop. but then again, not surprised at all when you see what school he's going to. Gotta hand it to Duke/K, their recruiting approach "We'll shield you as best we can!" works pretty well.

No reason Giles doesn't drop in the next rankings.

I am not a big proponent of the supposed "Duke conspiracy" that some think is afoot, but I do honestly believe that ESPN may have been biased with the list to keep Giles at 1 because they like Duke having the top 2 players.

I don't really know how ESPN does the rankings. Obviously Giles is not the best player now, does that mean they project him to be the 1 freshman or the 1 NBA prospect?

In response to both:

Maybe there just haven't been enough games? I can see why they keep Giles at #1, at least for right now. Has anyone TRULY played so well in the last few months to overtake a recruit like Giles? But by the time the next rankings come out (when?), a few other recruits should have proven enough in their senior year to overtake a guy who hasn't played in 8+ months.

Imagine anyone playing high school basketball is having a better year than Giles. Does a banged up Giles who hasn't played in months still deserve to be ranked ahead other prospects? I don't.

Sounds like ESPN thinks an injured Giles is better than a healthy Monk, Fox, and BAM.

To me it's more that they still think he's the best prospect, even while injured. If you're basing it on what he's done this season then he shouldn't be ranked in the top 100 at all.

So an injured Giles is still better than a healthy BAM, Monk, and Fox?

Yeah, sure.

What? I'm asking if you think an injured Giles should drop out of the rankings all together, because any kid in the top 100 is better than what Giles can do right now.

They base it on what he has showed in the past and what the believe his potential is for the future.

Are the rankings the best players in high school now? Or are they projections for who will be the best in college?

If it's the former Giles should be ranked as N/A, if it's the latter than I am fine with him as #1.

If Monk is really "only" the 8th best player in the class - wow, next year will be a fun college basketball season.

Evidently Dennis Smith tearing his ACL is enough to completely drop him from the rankings. He was previously a top-15 prospect.

No. He was removed because he is enrolled currently at NC St and is no longer a high school basketball player.

ESPN (Paul B) said Smith would have been ranked #5

Yeah, honestly they shouldn't rank him. Everybody knows he is one of the top guys going into college anyway. Murray wasn't ranked at all by ESPN for some odd reason in either class.

I think they said they don't rank international players or something like that. Also said he reclassified and committed to Kentucky after they had done their final update. Murray didn't commit until almost July if i remember correctly.

Duke can protect their ranking going into their freshman year, but not at the end of it. See Okafor.

Why is Giles still number 1 and has not played a game this season? I don't get it.
I don't want to be the one to tell you this, but he's a Dookie... He can do no wrong with ESPN.... Take that to the bank....

I have heard it mentioned several times on ESPN that this is the first time ever that the 1 and 2 players are going to a school together. Well if ESPN had their rankings right it should be the third time this has happened (Davis & MKG) and (Wall & Cousins).

No way Ball and Bridges are better than Monk and Fox

Ball are Bridges are really, really good. Especially Ball. But you're right. Fox and Monk are better than both. All 4 is gonna be top 10 draft picks next year, but again Fox and Monk are the best guards in this class.

Agree - I believe Fox is #1 player in country. He's phenomenol and we all know what impact PG's have on the game and when it comes tourney time!

I hadn't seen much of ball until recently but everything I have seen has been very impressive. The Fact is no one knows who the best guards are going to be out of this class. There's a group of 5-6 who are really really good and we all will just have to wait to see how they develop in the coming years.

Ball is extremely skilled for his size at PG.

Skilled minus the fact that he shoots the ball like he's throwing a grenade at the rim. And yeah, he makes some shots, but we'll see if that lasts against college competition. I suspect not, because form that awful is unlikely to hold up under real defensive pressure.

Which may or may not turn out to be a big deal. Jason Kidd never could shoot worth crap, yet was an all-time great (and Magic Johnson's jumper was pretty fugly). I tend to have problems getting over it, and, with as little bias as is possible, would take Fox or Monk over him every time.

With two torn ACL I'm not sure he is still the best prospect.....i wish no ill will obviously but two years in different knees can be career defining. He's an amazing player but would hold my breath until he has proven he is 101% still capable to play at his previous levels. Thus someone should overtake the #1 spot.

It's probably correct to be weary of his capabilities after two torn ACLs but he was still a beast after coming back from the first injury. Will definitely be a story line to follow next year.

You are correct, it is pretty ugly. He shot 31% on 70 attempts this summer at Adidas events but Fox shot the same percentage in EYBL this summer and Monk was only a little better at 34%. I haven't watched them much so their forms may look better but the results weren't that different.
