At a loss at lack of inside game offensively and defensively

Or maybe more appropriately lack of a consistent inside game. Especially concerning to me is the poor defensive efforts we are getting from our inside guys. We have 4 kids 6' 8" or taller who were ranked top 40 or better in their high school senior class and 2 other kids who played overseas but I would think would have been ranked somewhere in that area. If Wynyard can't crack this rotation, he must really be a project.

WOW what a surprise this is your kinda post with your 24th message . WE play D well inside so you are way off base there. We rebound well ect WE just don't have a pure low post scorer ( like a lot of teams ) down low. Just so you know KU and Oklahoma the top 2 teams in the country also lack a great low post scoring threat either. We just need continued D and boards from them and for them to make the easy offensive players like the 2 dunks Skal had tonight.

I am not surprised by our front court. They are what I thought they would be before the season started. They are role players having to play starter minutes. I count every win this year a good win and hope the guards can keep carrying us.

Really didn't think I was being that hyper critical. And I've been watching Ky basketball for a long, long time Jr. If you think our inside play offensively or defensively has been consistently good this year then I don't really value your opinion on this topic.

The zone took our bigs out of the offense because none of them can create a shot or shoot very well when they do get one.

I actually thought they defended and rebounded effectively tonight though. At least until the tail end of the game.

So I didn't have a problem with that tonight.

I understand and basically agree. But shouldn't kids that were this highly regarded out of high school, be contributing a little more than just being role players?

Our interior defense tonight was terrible.

Our inside D wasn't perfect, but I don't see how you can say it was terrible.

We held Ware, their best player and only low post threat, in check, and we demolished them on the boards -- especially offensive boards.

Down the stretch we were slow to rotate on some drives and that lead to easy baskets, but overall I thought our bigs were fine on the defensive end tonight.

Marcus is limited in how he can score in the post and Alex and Skal have no post moves. On defense, Marcus can hold his own unless he starts to foul. Alex can guard a Big, but Skal is so weak that he gives us very little on the ball defense.

It's our main hindrance.

I guess we saw it differently. Our defense was good at times. Terrible at times, especially down the stretch.

I agree. This was not a bad defensive or rebounding performance underneath. Not stellar, but not bad.

One reason we had a problem offensively was the guards getting the ball into the hands of the front lines guys in scoring position. It's not uncommon when you face a packed zone like that the first few times. In contrast, Alex was getting the ball a bunch against AL.

I thought it was a pretty bad defensive performance overall. MSU shouldn't in my opinion shoot 53% against us. And granted, part of the reason the interior players looked so bad at times was Murray repeatedly being beaten off the dribble. The only plus defenders we have unfortunately are Ulis and Briscoe. But as inside defenders, I wish our guys would either go for the block aggressively or close and hold their ground. The half-hearted attempt at a block we see too often accomplishes nothing.

The more troubling thing than the poor output from our 3 bigs that do play is the fact that Humphries can't even get in most games. Wynyard hasn't been here long enough, but if he's still not even getting in a month from now, that's troubling as well.

Why is that more troubling?

I agree with you but we all know at this point that Cal will NEVER significantly prioritize offense over defense. Deep down his core he believes that defense is more important at this level much in the same way Roy Williams believes that offense should always come first. Humphries will not play until he is an average defender. Personally I think it's a minor miracle he has finally started playing Mulder over Matthews in the last couple games.

We had too many turnovers (16) and we were fortunate to force a good number from State (19). We blew another large lead. There will be more losses.

Lee is key. He has to stop fouling so much. We need him on the floor for rebounding, and he's our best defender inside.

Cal's offense isn't set up for post offense success. Its built around only guard penetration, beat your man off the dribble and lob if the post defender helps out. He doesn't even attack a zone from the middle. Cal's big's should follow the Horace Grant way: You go kill what you eat!!! Don't measure Cal's post players on scoring. They should be scored on number of screens set, times they bring their man away from the basket, defensive rebounding and covering the guards arss's when they get beat, and the number of arss chewing's they can take when the guards don't play well. If I was Poy I would be telling Cal to kiss my ARSE!!!
