Asking for Prayers – Going Through a Rough Season

LOL, not the hulk, the other one.
That’s Antoine Dodson. He seems a little confused, but there’s a chance he may be on the market if you’re interested.

Anyway, this is what it felt like we were doing to the transfer portal.

Well, before the Wilkerson thing, anyway.

I know this is a little different from the usual UK basketball talk and transfer portal, but I figured this community might be one of the few places where I could be honest for a moment.

The past six months have been tough. I’ve been unemployed, with no unemployment eligibility (Thanks 1099) and doing everything I can to find steady work. I've applied to countless jobs, from design-related roles to content and support work, but it's been hard finding something that meets even my basic financial needs. I'm in the Louisville area.

I’m not posting this to ask for anything or make anyone uncomfortable, it's like a last resort sort of thing. I just wanted to share where I’m at in case someone here might know of a company hiring for remote roles, freelance gigs, or even just has advice. My background is in web design, UI/UX, and creative content, anything in those areas (or adjacent) would mean a lot right now.

I do have a GoFundMe up that I started as a last resort to stay afloat while job hunting, and I’m trying to keep faith that things will turn around soon. Anyway, thank you for letting me share this. If nothing comes of it, that’s okay. Just being able to say something out loud helps a little.

Appreciate this community more than you know.

Have you tried Robert Half Technologies? My wife is in Computer Science and used them to find contract work a few times. Another good one is Aerotek, they got her a job quick when we needed one over the years, good luck my friend. I will donate if I can. I’m in the Louisville area so I know how good they were finding opportunities here.

There are plenty of jobs out there for anyone willing to consistently show up on time and put forth minimal effort.

Apply at a staffing agency and see where they can place you. Be a server at a restaurant (I would suggest a nicer one) which may provide a little more flexibility.

Once you're established then look for small side gigs in your preferred profession. Perform well and full time gigs should follow in due time.

Bottom line, swallow your pride and get a job even if you feel it's beneath you. Zero shame in being employed.
Yup my wife worked at a call center while waiting on her career field. It sucked and we were still broke but we survived.

Good Luck.
On a side note go fund me money is considered income so taxes.
Thank you. I did look it up (first thing I did), and its considered a gift. I wouldn't have to pay taxes. I doubt I'd reach my goal anyways but some have been generous to donate.

I'm also unemployed thanks to some assholes in Washington. Two in particular, actually... I'll keep an eye out when I'm perusing Indeed. I feel for ya, Man. Keep your head high.

Do you have to any gig prospects to help you tread water?
I have a guy who needs a website but I have meeting with him in few weeks. Will be nice part time work but nothing sustainable. I did receive your DM thanks man. I appreciate you so much.

Man I feel ya , I haven’t worked since August 1st , trying not to deplete every last cent of our “ free capital “ living on my wife’s 3 days a week job . I hope the best for you , members of BBN are family .
Aw man, I am sorry to hear you're going through the same situation. It's been rough out there for a lot of people. So many are getting laid off and not enough jobs to fill. Unfortunately, I am still single and I don't have any spouse help with additional income. You're blessed with that even if its not much. Praying for you to brother!

I'm sorry to hear that man. I was in a similar position recently and felt hopeless for the longest time before finally landing a job in Louisville, which I had to move to from northern ky. I got fired one year ago today for reasons that are still unknown to me. I was also in web/software design and everyone else I know that got let go in the last couple years or so are having issues getting a job as well. It's tough saying this to someone that's going through it, but keep at it, even if the job market is complete bullshit right now. There were several things that got me through the last year including this board and past season got me through a lot of that pain, which I'm sure it has for you as well. Keep your head up and try to stay as positive as you can and try to seek out help wherever you can. You will land something when the time comes. Hope you find something soon!
Thanks man. I know what you mean. I was at a place I loved working for nearly 5 years and out of know where there were a few lay offs. It was at an agency. Did you get hired in the design or development(coding) aspect of that? I am keeping on keeping on. Applying for jobs is like a full time. I have 3 different portfolio websites lol. One for game design, graphic design and web design. Well they're landing pages because I already paid for one domain right now. I love this board, it's been a great place to be.

I'm not sure if you'd be interested but you could check Outlier AI for some gig work. Sometimes it's good, and can help you with bills and more. Training AI models. I've seen coding experts making good money there. Even generalist work is good if you get in the groove with them. I could send you a referral link if you're interested.

ETA - I've seen hourly rates at $50; most of mine has been $30 - $40
Hey man, thanks so much. I will check this out as well. It seems like I'd fit better as a generalist. I am exceptionally good with chatgpt and getting it to respond to the way I want it to. It's been a great asset tool and works great for assistance.

Hey man, I got someone on linkedin from New Zealand who reached out to me from Robert Half. I thought that was fishy. I will be looking more into them as well. I think I have used Aerotek before. I'll look for them as well. Thanks for the leads.

God bless you and I hope everything works out best for you. I know it’s a trying time but it won’t rain forever, brother. Big love from the brothers and sisters in BBN. I pray you find an unshakeable peace during your storm and don’t forget to give God the glory when the Sun comes out again!

Where my husband and I are as fulltime employees we started out with a temp agency. I hate working five days per week, but it's paying the bills.

Hey man, may be different than what you’re use to but being in Louisville you are right by a major airline hub. I’d look into DHL, FedEx air, UPS air, and all the major airlines….look at operations jobs.

Additionally, look at airport jobs in general in the tech/computer science field.
