Why do Navy's helmets have NASA on the side? Google says NASA is part of the Air Force.

I know the Army fans and especially the players that would have to practice for another month for some incredibly insignificant bowl game are happy but they could end up 6 and 6 and aren't there 5 and 7 teams in a completely meaningless, why even bother playing in it bowl games.

At it creation only Navy/Marine aviators were astronauts for the most part. It’s a salute to John Glenn etc etc

NASA is civilian in nature and definitely didn’t have any part in launching satellites with the objective of keeping an eye on the communist bastards of the USSR.

I really enjoy this game. I grew up rooting for the Navy because all of my uncles had fought in WWII in the Navy. Then I joined the U.S. Army so my allegiance had to shift to the service I was in uniform for.

But now my granddaughter is a Cadet at the Air Force Academy so I find myself pulling for the Falcons. The Air Force beat both Navy and Army this year and won the Commander In Chief Trophy when they beat Army.

With all that said GO ARMY

It was only a few years ago that it occurred to me that my great uncle, who unlike his Army brothers was drafted into the Navy in WWII, had likely never seen the ocean until shortly before he was in the shit in the Pacific. Crazy to think about.

I had an uncle just like that. He was from Pike County, KY and had never been more than 25 miles from home in his life. The biggest body of water he had seen was the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River. Not much more than a creek.

A week after Pearl Harbor, Dec 7, 1941, he went down to join the Navy. He had just turned 16 years old in October. They signed him up and after Boot Camp in Michigan he was off to the South Pacific. I seriously doubt he could swim very good, if at all.

That is really not true. Early astronauts were about evenly split between Air Force pilots and Navy/Marine aviators. The Naval Academy is honoring Navy/Marine astronauts with their uniforms today.

Was seriously wondering if either team would complete a pass. At the 9:56 mark of the 4th quarter we got one.

Look Drama Queen

Are you really Officer material?

Really?

Like leading men into battle?

I love watching this game every year, even though Vandy could beat either team. Oh, I forgot, Vandy beat us this year.

The Astronaut on the helmet is Bruce McCandless ftom the Navy who did the first untethered space walk in 1984.
Brig. General Robert Stewart was on the fljght and also walked in space. Worked for Stewart when he was commander of U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command.

The Naval Academy Uniforms are to honor the history of the academy and its relationship with NASA. 54 Academy graduates have gone on to be astronauts. That is more than any university, to include Air Force academy.

Semper Fi

Those of you who are interested in Marine Corp and football should read the book mosquito bowl written by Buzz Bissinger ( same guy who wrote friday night lights ) very interesting read.

This is my favorite game every year and the No. 1 thing left on my sports bucket list.

I always root for Army in the series. Love the uniforms. Love the tradition.

I am 68 years old and as others here I grew up listening to Cawood calling UK games in both football and basketball. One of his comments that me and my buddies still shout every time UK scores a TD in football on any long play is "checking for flags".

One of the great and most historic sporting events world wide.

I’d love to attend one, one day.
Same here Hack. It a Bucket List thing I would love to do.

I don't know if they showed it or not but watching the cadets March into the stadium and then their seats is impressive.

Didn't watch the entire game. Wonder if this was mentioned. Although not a 'testing' for NASA or space flight....still was unbelievable at the time (and still is). He died the other day at the age of 94.

On Aug. 16, 1960, Col. Kittinger stepped from a balloon-supported gondola at the altitude of 102,800 feet. In freefall for 4.5 minutes at speeds up to 614 miles per hour and temperatures as low as -94 degrees Fahrenheit, he opened his parachute at 18,000 feet. (NASA/Corbis via Getty Images)

I watched it myself, and ended up being a really close exciting game, felt terrible for #34 who fumbled at the goal line.

Have been once to Army Navy and is definitely worth attending. The singing of the school hymns at the end of the game is a great tradition. One similar game I wouldn't mind taking in is Harvard-Yale, very different student bodies than Army Navy, but the same idea, pretty much amateur teams that point to the game all year long, no matter what the record. And usually is a very close game as well.

And now Coach Ken is gone from the Naval Academy.
15 years is a helluva run and he had some very good teams. Leader of Men!
