I recall him questioning the talent he inherited after going 3-9 his first year.
He was hired in mid December of 2012 so I'm not sure how much influence he made on the Piggies 27th ranked 2013 recruiting class. I don't know how much talent was left over but the 2012 - 2009 classes were ranked #34, #24, #49 and #16. IOW, I don't think the cupboard was exactly bare in Fayetteville.
He was 2-6 in League play last year with 4 losses by 7 or less. Bowl results made it popular to criticize the SECW as "overrated" but, top to bottom, that was still a damn impressive collection of football teams. I'm not sure who you can label as the doormat on that side.

Like petrino in his first year, bielema wasn't left with much. Or at least much that fit his style.
90% of our offense from our 4-8 team in 2012 left for the NFL in Tyler Wilson, Knile Davis, Dennis Johnson, Cobi Hamilton and Chris Gragg. We started a walk on and 2 true freshmen on the OL and had 4 total LBs on the roster. Bielema's first class has made a huge impact out of necessity really since they will be juniors next season and have started from the beginning.
a year of John L Smith combined with the attrition from Petrino's roster and the complete change of style (along with a hurt QB) wasn't a very good combination for 2013
