Antonio Reeves up for Jerry West Award

Walker makes a good point.

Antonio Reeves is probably the most underrated leading scorer in the history of Kentucky basketball,” Walker said. “I’ve never seen a guy who’s averaging almost 20 points a game, and when you start talking about this team, you mention maybe three or four guys before you even mention his name.” That’s quite the statement coming from Walker, one of the best players in UK basketball history. And it very well might be the truth. Going into Kentucky’s game against Florida on Wednesday night, Reeves is averaging 19.5 points. He’s shooting 43.1% from 3-point range. And he’s been incredibly consistent, with just one game under 14 points since the Wildcats’ season opener, a steady offensive force for a young Kentucky team. So is Reeves, like Walker said, indeed the most underrated top scorer in UK history?

The 2nd half of the Arkansas game showed another wrinkle in his game. I was pleasantly surprised to see his defense become a major factor in helping the Cats win a road game. Perhaps the best part of that is it never affected his ability to score. Antonio Reeves is getting better and this is bad news for the SEC going forward.

How is Knecht not on that list...
The Jerry West award is only for the best shooting guard.

Knecht actually starts and plays mostly at the 4 spot (albeit in what is essentially a four guard lineup) so doesn’t qualify.

I didn't know that. Wasn't West mostly a point guard in the NBA?

I think he played a lot of both roles.

It’s actually hard to say, because terms like PG/SG/SF/PF were really not even used yet when West first entered the league. In the 60s teams tended to just think of themselves as having two guards, two forwards and a center. And with the two guards playing largely interchangeable roles.

West’s running mate in the latter half of his career was mostly 6’1” Gail Goodrich. In the early part of his career it was 6’3” Dick Barnett. I guess it’s debatable which one was considered the PG/SG in those backcourts …but there’s no doubt West was the one with the ball at crunch time.

Listed as a 6' 6" guard...same as AR

It’s not about your listing, it’s about the position you actually play.

In case you haven’t noticed, a TON of players who list themselves as guards nowadays never actually play the 1 or 2 spots. There’s now a huge difference between how players choose to list themselves and their real position.

Knecht has not played any at the 2 this season. He starts at the 4 spot in a small ball lineup, plays entirely at either the 4 or 3 spots, but none at the 2. That’s why he didn’t qualify for this award.

That plainly differs from Reeves, who starts at the 2 and actually does play a good number of minutes there (although probably more at the 3).
