I love that madness kicks off the season and let's me know that games are only a couple weeks away. But, I haven't watched it a few years and can't really get excited about watching. I went a couple of times while in undergrad in the early 2000s, still in Memorial at the time and enjoyed it. I know its a big show and the players and recruits like it. However, the last couple of times I watched, I never got into the whole spectacle of it, and I kinda feel like I'm in the very small minority.

It's never as entertaining as it could be, but I would never miss it. I think the long lead-in, and even the women's part before takes away from it to be honest.

The Cal era has brought a level of transparency, exposure and information overload that we've never seen in the sport before. It doesn't take the luster away from madness, but it also doesn't have the same "first look at the team" feel it had back in the day.

I mean, look at last year. We got to see the team play 6 games on ESPN. We've gotten to see the combine 2 years in a row. Practice reports, scrimmage videos, etc..

I'll watch it (for the cloggers mostly:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) but frankly usually look forward to the Blue-White game more than BBM. I want to see basketball action, not smoke and mirrors.

I feel the same way. I still watch, but it was never that great to begin with, it was just the official kickoff of basketball season and our first chance to see the team, the new players, etc. With that angle gone, it's just not that big a deal.

Some of this is just attributable to modern technology.

If you go back 20 years, Madness was the first time that a very high percentage of UK fans had ever seen newcomers to the team. Even if you only go back 10 years, it was unlikely that more than a small percentage (even if they knew what the player looked like) had seen the new players in action. Now, without any significant difficulty, I can see multiple complete games for all of UK's recruits, long before they arrive at UK. There's just not as much novelty now.

Anything and everything gets me excited about beginning the basketball season.

Well, except rumors of ineligibility or injuries.

This year the cards gave us an early present and that helped usher in the season quite nicely.

i love it. although it generally gets pretty flat by nights end. it used to be that we knew little to nothing on our recruits. but with youtube, all star games, and coachcal.com....its not a mystery any more. can you imagine someone like tubby or BCG release videos of guys at practice? the season is more all year round rather than just starting in october.

I look forward to it and watch it every year. I love the fact that it's tradition and marks the very early beginnings of basketball season. It's a glorified pep rally but a nice way to begin to see the personality of the team, etc. If nothing else, it's worth it just to see the guys run up and down the court and get an idea of who has improved, etc.

That being said, I DVR it and begin watching an hour or so after it begins. Then I can skip through all of the boring parts.

Take it for what it is. And at least 23,000 think it is great. It literally is a tradition. And we do it better than anyone in the nation. Nobody could argue against that. It's just a friggin show and not meant to be anything else these days. So what.

It's PR. It's a recruiting tool. (Covered by the SEC Network) It's a showcase for new players. Some fans, that have never been to a real games, get to sit in the lower section and see players and coaches up close.

It is for both the men and women's program. I know lot's hate that the girls are there, but it is 20-25 minutes of your time. Get over it. Believe it or not, some UK fans like both programs. (How dare they)

It really is nothing more than that. Not sure why anyone criticizes it at all.

My biggest complaint is that they go the politically correct route showing the Woman. Lets be honest, ( other than John Short, lol ) NOBODY cares! It blows my mind that people camp out to see glitz and glamour, instead of paying 10 and have the best seats most of us will ever have for the B/W game.

Question about tonight;
Will it be faste paste enough to satisfy the viewing public. It problem won't be and this will be a serious probably for me. If anyone else disagrees with this, meet me at Applebee's for further discussion.

Already seeing the players in action during the televised practice and the games in the Bahamas last year, takes alot of the excitement and anticipation out of it for me.

Ever since Jason Parker got hurt, all I care about is that no one gets hurt. It's become a big recruiting tool for Cal, so I guess I don't want it gone. But I don't watch it.

i love BBM
it is our first chance to see our team
normally they put on a good show for entertainment (think concert)

i also love the BW game

I don't watch it either. I think its mainly an entertainment for the kids, younger adults and potential recruits. There was a certain symbolism to it when it was midnight madness. Now its more media hype than basketball.

Well since kids are more exposed now more than ever, it's not as good because it's so easy to find out before players before hand. This yr I intentionally didn't follow any recruiting so it may be exciting to see tonight

I love and follow the women's team and Matt Mitchell, but Madness needs to be about men's basketball only. The women's segment and all of the interviews with people who have nothing to do with athletics kind of deflate the excitement.

Honestly, I don't like it anymore after it started getting showy.
This is the thing for me too. I always watch it and do enjoy it. But I guess I'm too old school to really enjoy the over the top special effects and smoke, etc. It just looks to me like they are trying too hard or something. I'd love to see them scale back on the theatrics a little. If anyone on here thinks that makes me a bad fan then they can kiss my ass.

I love watching for the new guys on the team, but to be honest, its not that entertaining to Watch. It wouldn't be worth it to me to camp out for to see. It's bad basketball with no defense being played. Don't get me wrong. I don't want to see our guys playing hard in this game. We can't afford to lose a player to injury. Most fans will think I'm a bad fan for admitting this, but honestly, we all know its the truth
