All we need...

All we really need to have a strong year (besides minimize injuries which we have no control over) are things I think are doable:

1)skal step his defense way up and wind up with 8 and 8 with a few blocks each game against sec level comp.

2)briscoe to shoot 70% fts and 33% from 3.

3)Murray to improve his feel for when to go for it and when to pull back.

4)one additional player turns it on in the tourney (a la miller in 2012).

Even in attempting to avoid pessimism, Briscoe isn't gonna be close to 35%. That's not happening. And to me, we need to start valuing shootin guards who can shoot. There's plenty who can put the ball on the deck AND hit outside of 10 feet. But anyway.....

Skal will need massive improvement and a totally different game to get 8 boards a game in sec play. I don't see it happening. Hope I'm wrong.

Murray should continue to get better and better as he settles into "a" role. Right now he's just trying to be too many roles.

We will be fine. I truly believe cal is going to get something out of Skal. Briscoe and the rest will handle themselves.

1. That would be great. The points would be great, but grabbing 8 rebounds a game is what we need from him. He has to improve the work on the boards. That is about effort and getting into position to rebound mostly.

2. Definitely. Briscoe shoots at that clip and we are in very good shape.

3. This will come as the season progresses. All of Cal's great guards struggled with knowing when to drive, when to shoot, and when to dish. Knight was very frustrating early in the season. Very similar thing with Murray. He will learn and once he does, then look out.

4. We need Poythress to provide that Senior leadership and emerge as a beast in March. He has shown glimpses of it throughout his career (in the Bahamas last year, against UofL Saturday). He just needs to become consistent. Same thing we said about Darius until the very end of his Senior year.

Ulis is going to be the guiding force for this team. Murray and Briscoe are going to lead the way scoring. Poythress needs to step up and dominate the boards. Lee has to rebound and play defense. Labissiere just has to keep improving. Matthews and Willis need to provide quality minutes off the bench. Matthews needs to provide good defense and rebounding. Willis just needs to be solid defensively, rebounding, and knock down open shots.

This team still has loads of potential. UK fans are notorious for expecting our teams to be clicking on all cylinders from the word go. It doesn't usually work that way with teams that rely heavily on new players every season. Even with players back, they are in new roles or in Poythress' case coming off a major injury. There is an adjustment period we need to take into account.

Briscoe wasn't brought in to be a shooting guard, that's just kinda how things worked out. We have several guys who were supposed to shoot well.

True. And those guys averages are on the way up.

If Ulis and Murray shoot around 40% from 3 (which we expected coming into the season), then Briscoe shooting around 30% would be manageable as long as he only shot 1-2 per game. We also need Poythress shooting at least 30%. We need Willis at around 35% off the bench as well.

Main thing is Ulis and Murray should shoot 70-75% of our attempts from 3 point range. Ulis and Murray together should be taking 13 or 14 a game and every one else needs to take 4 or 5 collectively. We just don't need guys like Briscoe and Poythress jacking up 3's all game.

Enjoy the process!!! Kind of interesting to me to watch Cal work them up. He did a great job Sat!
