Alex Poythresssssssss!

With Alex you have to wait until the next game to be sure. And maybe wait a few weeks actually.

I kid. Hope he does well Alex is an example of someone who wanted a degree, earned his way, and is still going to make plenty of money. Had he left as a freshman his confidence might not have allowed it.

I have it on good authority from someone that knew him that said he was extremely smart and probably enjoyed school more than basketball.

Alex was/is an NBA Athlete...but he lacked the Appetite. Maybe the D-League lifestyle lit his fuse...

Have it on good authority that certain players like AP and Skal do better once they're away from Cal's ummm, vocal instruction....they are the exception rather than the rule , of course

Bingo. You could see in his body language that he hated being screamed at. Cal toned it down with Poy later on but Poy was already mentally checked out. That and his injury bogged him down while he was here.

If you notice, after AP laid 20 points on Duke early as a frosh, things got progressively worse as it wore on him (injury notwithstanding)

Hope Philly gives him a chance next season. With their weak management, you never know what will happen in that organization. He certainly has done some things in the few games they have brought him in for at the end of this season to where he should have been able to open some eyes into at least giving him a try next year. Hoping he has success as he seemed like such an upstanding guy while at UK.

I believe that IS three very good games in a row...
Corner turned?

Looks like the kind of player (good character and some growth potential) that some team wanting to fill a minimum contract might keep on their roster.
If so, good for him.

My one issue with Cal. Even Pitino understood that you have to treat different kids differently. I remember one time he jumped all over Pelphrey during a timeout because Derrick Miller had been screwing up. Pelphrey was tough enough to take it. Miller figured "I better get my act together or he'll scream at me". Miller came out of the timeout and played awesome.

There may some truth to this. I mean I do think that Cal treats certain players differently in terms of his yelling, but lately I'm beginning to wonder if some of the mind boggling departures and transfers have anything to do with guys just get sick of getting reamed for basically everything.

i always said, Poythress was too good of a student. I bet he studied just as much as practiced. Now its 100%..he'll grow.

I really hope he has a long career in the NBA. He just couldn't put it together here.

yeah, i really hope he has a long career.

I always liked Poythress here. He naturally would do better in NBA, because spacing is much better.

He is also less scouted so let's hope he gets contract signed.

But he is shooting a lot better, so that's good.

Briscoe got yelled at more than he deserved for example

What a shame what that injury did to his career. He played out of his mind down the stretch in 2014 and it carried over into the next year before he went down. Wisconsin is not even within 10 points if Poy is on the floor...

I think there is a very good chance the Sixers bring him back. Brett Brown has been effusive in his praise of Alex' play. They were very glad to be able to rest Dario Saric the last few games ( he didn't play at all last night) knowing that Alex would get the job done at the PF position. Saric is their franchise PF but they would love to have a good backup for him. They brought up Sean Long from the D league before Alex and he wasn't nearly as productive. And they aren't looking to draft a PF this year.

Hopefully we see at least two UK players with the Sixers next year, as it is likely they will draft either Monk or Fox unless they get the #1 pick.

I disagree with that sorta. His senior was disappointing as he hadn't recovered from injury but he was great his junior year before the injury and he was great in the tourney in his sophomore year as well. I know what you are saying but he was a damn good player at Uk that just had some tough breaks.

Started for Philly tonight and was 9--14..18 pts 6 rbs!! Good luck next year Alex!

Some guy named Ricky Jones was on Hey Kentucky the other night and Matt asked him about Poythress (right after he went 5-5 from 3 in a game), and the guy said AP is D-league talent. The guy is a UL fan, but he was sticking up for Cal, so I don't think he was hating on Alex because of that. Also, he got his Masters from UK, so I don't know what his deal was. Anyway, glad to see Alex doing well.

had a nice coast-to-coast drive and big-hand finger roll but still looks like the same guy as far as being a little bit slow to the ball and slow to react

after embiid, saric & simmons are philly's best players, and they're both primarily 4s. poythress was probably auditioning for a chance somewhere else, but who knows with caligulangelo jr

With him making a roster, that just leaves Dakari as the only 2nd round pick/undrafted player to not make the NBA

I hate when people make comments like that. The Sixers literally had one power forward on their roster before they called up Sean Long and then Alex. Many teams find themselves in this position due to injuries and trades. That is what the D league is for. Do people not understand that NBA teams have 15 players? Alex may not ever be a starter but neither is a guy like Kelly Olynyk, yet Olynyk is a key bench guy for the Celtics and will be there a long time.

Worst case scenario...he starts in the D-League again next year. But these last two games will make GMs consider giving him a shot when they need a guy early next year.

If Alex can do in the summer league what he did in the D with the possibility of getting to fall camp...who knows
