Alex Poythress: "If we play like this every game, we won't lose many games"

I like the confidence.

Hopefully AP realizes we need that energy from him every single game. Always.

The energy was fantastic on Saturday and Alex stepped up and played like a man.
However, we can't depend on all those threes going down. I know we are better that a 30% three point shooting team but we aren't 50% good.
We turned the ball over way too much and gave up way too many rebounds. Once those things are cleaned up and we get to a consistent/respectable shooting percentage from the outside there won't be too many teams that can compete.
I still think this team is going to struggle with their energy away from Rupp. That is a hurdle they need to clear soon. Hopefully our road woes don't cost us too many games.

This team so far reminds me of the Knight, Jones, Lamb team that really struggled on away games with not having the energy that the home crowd brings. They will have to improve with what we have seen so far or we are going to lose a few road games int he SEC. I think home and Neutral games we will do fine. We don't seem to have that killer instinct yet.

Had Murray not played so out of control we would've won by 15. I doubt you'll see him play like that again. I think with Briscoe being out, he tried to do too much. I thought our team did a lot of growing against Louisville. That was a great game for us.

i also think cal has it in his head he need to drive the basket every time he gets the chance. much like last year when he wanted booker to not just be a shooter.

Glad Poy has figured it out. Hoping to see him bring it against Ole Miss, and LSU in particular.

Honestly I like Murray shooting 6-8 three's a game. I truly believe he can hit at least 3 per game shooting 6-8 a game. He is not a bad shooter, just had a couple of really bad games from 3. Otherwise he is shooting in the high 40s from 3. Hell he is up to almost 40% despite those bad games.

Looked to me like Murray was trying to pick up where he left off in the Ohio State game which was a mistake. So many on this board wanted Cal to run the offense through Murray after the OSU game because he went on a crazy scoring spree for a few minutes but I hope Murray and this board learned their lesson after watching the Louisville game. Murray is too young and too inconsistent to run an offense through. He's a volume shooter that will hurt us in a few games if he's allowed to play out of control.

If Murray starts playing more efficiently this team will make a HUGE leap. A TON of possesions are wasted as a result of his eraticness.

I like him shooting threes all day long when he has his feet under him and the ball is passed to him. He just needs to cut out the shot-creating and let the game come to him. He's money when his feet are set and Ulis or someone passes him the ball. He's a 2 guard!

I just don't think Murray has the quickness or lateral movement to create his own shot consistently. Driving east to west is not what he should be doing. Cal said as much. Murray is a crafty player though.. I bet he learned a lot from that game.

I didn't think we played that great on Saturday outside of the insane 3 point shooting, but that is just me.

To be fair to Poy he played really well though.
Agree UK. I was kind of surprised reading all the posts Saturday after the game of how great we played. The euphoria of beating UL I guess.

To be fair to Murray he was fouled like 3-4 times that weren't called which resulted in his missing shots and turning it over . But yes he needs to play with more consistency.

that is my biggest gripe. for every 10 drives to the lane i think the refs call 1 maybe 2 fouls. yet there is contact on each. kid gets zero love from the refs while other players spend all day at the line.

Yeah, it was a good win. Beating a top 15 (basically as they were 16) opponent in a rivalry game with a starter out is huge anytime, so we needed a big win and we got it. We just looked terrible the last 10-12 mins for the most part and hit a lot of crazy 3's to hang on. That is not a recipe for success. Now a mixed of 3's and down low to Poy and maybe some lobs to Lee and Skal (Idk why we do not try this to get him in some games) inside and the O should be cooking most games. I'm still not sure about our D.

I agree. He is very skilled and very crafty though like you said so that makes up for a lack of quickness.

No, stop it. You know, sometimes a UK player just plays bad, it's not the refs missing calls.
The amount of fouls that are called every game is high enough, it ruins the flow of the game and in some cases makes it unwatchable. You can't call every stupid touch foul and we don't want them to. We play very tight/sticky defense, if they start calling touch fouls we lose that defensive edge.

Murray had better get himself under control and think more team oriented. Even on the fast break where he gave the ball up to Ulis he drove too close to the basket and the UL player was able to turn and make a play on Tyler. Granted he was fouled but it would have been an easy layup otherwise instead of a trip to the line. I am a big Murray fan and think he will be fine but the sooner the better.

He could change the word "we" to "l" in that statement and it would mean the same thing . And he DOES have control of that . Hope he realizes it .

Whatever dude. Peope like you ruin message boards.

Did we not get the present we wanted from Santa? (I tried hard to show I was just messing with you.....dude...) I am a message board ruiner though...but I have the face for it.

Murray is going to have some great games and some horrible games. Brandon Knight was very much the same as a freshman. He pushed us past West Virginia in the second round, scoring 30 points, and was clutch against North Carolina in the Elite Eight. He went 6/23 from the field against UConn, though. Murray is the same type of volume scorer, although he plays differently. We're going to see some games that remind us of his top 5 pick talent, and some games where we fling just about every expletive at the television as a result of his play.

It is what it is. That said, it's a whole helluva lot better than having a 2nd tier kid on the wing who never gets hot.

It was such a weird game....No Briscoe, Hawkins and Alex give us unexpected scoring. Our best team shooting exhibition for the season against a quality opponent BUT we got CRUSHED and OBLITERATED on the glass. Skal and Murray both were extremely poor but have a ton of growth potential for a March run. The team is an enigma wrapped in a question mark. However we have a top 3 point guard in the country (when healthy) and we still with our shooting and post defense/rebounding issues have top 3 talent. Wild year in general for college basketball helps.

Not sure which game he was playing in...they should have won by no less than 15 to 20, blew a 16 point lead and ended up being saved by a last second missed 3 by Louisville

It's obvious to everyone (except cal) that we are not going to get a foul called even 30% of the time we drive. We must have a balance.

the fouls being called arent ruining the game. its the fouling that is going on whether its called or not that is ruining the game.

call all the fouls you see/can...sooner or later you will learn to play defense without fouling

If Lee's last shot falls, we lose. I like Poy's statement, but I want to see him string 5-6 consecutive games together before I get excited. I do agree, this team can get much better.

He is not a poor man's Redick. Murray is better than that.

In what way? I'm not saying that as a slight. They have similar games, at least when Murray is switched on. Except Redick was one of the better college players of the last generation (2x first team All-American, 2nd leading scorer in ACC history, Naismith Award winner ...), and then went on to be a lottery pick and make the better part of $100 million in the NBA.

I hope Jamal can sniff that kind of success.

Redick was once a freshman who scored 15 points a game while shooting about 40% from three.

Murray isn't a poor man's Redick. That's an insult to Murray. You don't think Murray would sniff that kind of success if he played 4 years at Kentucky?
