When KY goes to the nickle (5 def backs), what front do they play? 4-2 or 3-3? And who is expected to come out?

I don't know about UK, but its pretty common when running a 3-4 to go into a 2-4-5. Thats how UGA usually handles it.

I would assume with our lber depth being low for the next 2 weeks that we will replace a lber with a DB.

We generally go to a four down 2 LB set.

I don't care for that lineup, you actually have one less man in coverage, although an extra DB. I like having 4 LB in there, provided they can play in space, plus if you are blitzing there is a much better chance they can get to or chase down the qb than a down lineman.

If memory serves me we have blitzed out of that formation.

I'd expect in obvious passing downs when we go nickel to look like:

Ware - CJ Johnson - Lewis - Hatcher (when he's back)

Forrest - Flanigan

Quinn McWIlson Stamps Westry with Randolph/McLain at nickel

I'd switch Lewis with either Meant or Miggins. Don't forget about Bell either.

With all the spread offense being run today combined with the HUNH pace, DC's answer is going to a 3-4 alignment to get more athletic and cover ability on the field. I am just not a fan of taking one of those guys off and adding a down linement, even if adding a DB. Your LB should be more athletic than any DL, I just don't understand getting less athletic on the field in passing situations when your defense goes to a nickle package. I am not saying I am right, it just how I would like to play it, but of course it's personell dependent, When motivated to play Javedon Clowny was plently athletic enough to run a 4 man front and rush or drop into a zone coverage.

We take a D-lineman off. Usually the nose. We can and do sub out our bigger standup DE as and bring in a lighter OLB to get down in pass rush stance along with the other OLB we left on the field. Then we bring in our Nickel to play the OLB that stayed on the field. The personnel is actually 2 for real down linemen that are our more athletic big guys along with 4 LB's, two of which have their hands down and then 5 DB's. We can still do all our blitz packages including zone blitzes which can be very effective with so many cover guys on the field.

Traditionally the Sam (Strongside Linebacker) leaves the field when the nickel comes onto the field. So looking at our depth chart, Jabari Johnson would come off, Blake McClain would come on.

This is a loaded question. I've seen us take a lot of different positions off the field in nickle situations. Down and distance, field position, and the type of QB we are facing all go into consideration when game planing for nickle packages.
What I DONT like is when we go nickle (or even dime) and then only rush two or three. I don't care how talented the secondary is, if the QB has forever in the pocket, he will eventually find someone. That works in the NFL on occasion when it is 3rd and forever, but in college, I like rushing at least 4 99% of the time. I have been impressed with Eliot and Stoops with how we disguise who is rushing and dropping into coverage. That's why its important to continue to sign guys in the DE/OLB mold that can do both, which we have been doing well.

lol, that's what I said how many teams played it up above, including UGA, I wasn't sure how UK played it but a 2-4-5 alignment, in my opinion, is the way to go.

I know it's just semantics to some but we don't align in a 2-4-5 - we just use 2-4-5 personnel.

Yeah, seems I am the one misreading, our alignment would look like a 4 man front, but the 2 outside guys are OLBs, sometimes one of them puts his hand down and we only have 1 true DL if its one of those 3rd and forever situations. Could be because LB, and OLB in particular is the deepest position on the team with 4 guys who could start and not lose much if any. DC is trying to get as many of them on the field as he can at once.
