6-18 on FT's

We padded the rebounding stats on a lot of those missed free throws.

Yeah it sll depends on who goes to the line but unless it's Luis we're not going to like the results. The rest of the team is terrible from the stripe. Gotta work on that bigtime. 33% is awful, don't know if I have ever seen a percentage that low.

Lee is always going to miss 3 of 5 . always so no point in starting a thread about it . Briscoe is actually a good shooter from the line but he is in a slump . I am not worried one bit as Lee won't be in at the line when it matters and Briscoe won't be until he has his confidence back . I really hate these threads as Free throw shooting has lost us 1 game in total in the Cal era ( UNC in 2014 ) . One .

Huh? Briscoe is NOT in a slump. His form is bad. Puts way too much spin on the ball, which takes away any chance of getting a good bounce or shooter's roll. Unless he fixes that, he will continue to shoot poorly.

This thread wasn't about Lee, read the original post again. It was directed at the team as a whole. We suck and everyone not named Tyler Ulis needs to fix their shooting.
And yes, if Lee wants to be a big part of this team he needs to fix it. He's a junior, there's no reason he should be struggling from the stripe. I'm glad you're not worried about it, but it is a concern. We have lost games in the Cal ERA because of bad free throw shooting, I shutter to think of what this board will be like when we lose a few games because we can't shoot free throws.

One of the knocks on Briscoe in HS was that he couldn't shoot as well as he should..... Well it's true.
Ulis and Murray are the best ft shooters on the team.

FT...13-24 54.2%...Uconn Champ Game....lost by 6.

The only person who really concerns me is Briscoe. He won't be in the game down the stretch in close games. Luckily I think Matthews is coming along nicely.

Why dont bad freethrow shooters just try using the backboard? I just do not understand that? Lee should use backboard!

Ulis Murray Poythress Willis can shoot them
Lee Matthews Briscoe Skal can't shoot them
Skal should be better

Briscoe is the one that really needs to improve because he is such a force driving the basketball. To me it is inexcusable for a PG to shoot less than 70% from the FT line.

We have guys who will struggle at the line for the rest of the season. It's a weakness we'll just have to deal with.

I disagree. I think we end up being a good shooting team. Even 2011-12 started out bad Davis and Teague struggled then got better I think this team will be a good shooting team

You realize that six more ft's would result in us shooting 79% as a team for the game right? That's not realistic to expect. The truth is, it is not nearly as valuable as people generally make it out to be, and it's not something to be freaking out about in November.

Murray's shooting 85.7 from the line thus far, don't lump him in with the rest of them.

Exactly right. As as far as the poster who said that FT shooting has cost us one game in the Cal Era, think again. Against Uconn in the 2011 semis, we went 11-27 from the line and lost by 1 point. That game was definitely lost at the line and the final game would have been against a Butler team that we would have handled fairly well, assuming we didn't go 11-27 in that game too.

Ask Nazr.

It amazes me how these 5 star players, particularly guards, aren't great at free throws. No reason that any of them should be under 75-80%, imo. Not just pointing out our players, I am talking about the players across the country, as well.

Agree. To me an example of how ESPN/YouTube has changed the game. Fundamentals aren't important to a lot of high school kids anymore...it's all about the highlight tape. If your mechanics are off in FT shooting by the time you get to college, it could take a couple of years of coaching to correct it, if ever.

Also just shot 33% from the field, and 31% from 3. Just an overall pitiful shooting game. No one thing lost the game. Also no WCS hurt (biggest reason).
Okay but those shooting percentages are going to happen. Sometimes you run into a good defense. But nobody plays defense on you at the free throw line. 52% from the free throw stripe in a 6 point game is what did UK in. Make your free throws and you win. Some of those misses were front ends of a one and one too.
Also, WCS was a great player but we can't keep blaming losses on missing players. Uconn killed us with their backcourt just like they did Florida and Michigan State.
Just make free throws and you win.

2010 team missed 13 FT's against W.Va.....Lost by 7

Cal recruits with athleticism as the main ingredient.....it has served him well but there are times when having a bunch of athletic non-shooters has caught up to him (That team also went 4-32 from the three that game....sad)

Blame it all on me.
Every time they get ready to shoot a free throw, I tell my wife he will miss it.
I need to shut the hell up.

Don't forget the championship game against Arizona.......IF Nazr shoots 50% from the line UK wins that game & another title

Apparently you don't remember our Final Four loss to UConn when we went 4 for 12.
