5 stars by state since 2000

Virginia is surprising to me.
One of the first things I noticed. Wonder where they all go. VaTech has been great at times, but not in a long while. VA hasn’t had much to brag about that I can remember. The North Carolina teams aren’t world beaters. Not terribly far to Clemson, Ohio State and Penn State I suppose.

In Virginia, high school football is a way of life, it's bigger than Christmas day.

While working, I frequently traveled to VA. When held over the weekend during football season I always tried to catch a HS game. I was stunned at how much better VA ball was than KY ball.

Peace

Penn St has always recruited Virginia hard from back in JoePa days. Va Tech started winning & started keeping more home, leading to Penn St mediocre results

New Mexico also stood out. I realize that it has a smaller population than Arizona and MUCH smaller than Texas, but it's not 0% population of those states.

It’s almost like there’s a correlation with population size and the total number of African Americans in most of the states with higher numbers of 5 stars. Interesting.

Hampton Roads metro gets it done, with a little help from Richmond and NOVA. Lots of military kids in Hampton, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach. They have shown up on elite rosters nationwide because they aren't necessarily "Virginia People". We got in there at times 20 years ago.

Not completely. That is obviously a factor but doesn't explain the difference between Ohio or Pennsylvania and Illinois, New York, and Michigan. It's also about good high school football.

It really is baffling how Texas Longhorns football isn't in the title picture every year.

While 125 is a lot the chances of pulling a 5 star out of Florida is next to impossible. They produce on average 2 5 stars a year. On top of that getting a 5 star out of KY is equally as hard because they are a unicorn.

The recruiting hot beds haven’t changed. The places the higher rated guys go hasn’t changed. Hence that is why the pecking order in college football hasn’t changed. There have been teams that have benefited with the right coaches but it is hard to maintain see VA Tech-GA Tech.

I do think the transfer portal is going to spread the talent out but NIL will allow the brands recycle top talent. But a young 4 star WR at GA/FL/AL may leave because of incoming transfers.

Lots of teams in NY don't play 11 man football.
And they do not have the strong feeder system that Georgia, Florida or Texas has. They start very young in those states and have more money to spend on youth than New York.

Football is stronger in warm weather states and interest is much higher too.

Always wished UK had a series with Va. or Va.Tech and had gotten more into recruiting Va. Know it been tough to recruit against Va. Tech and Penn State for Va. kids but surprised as close a Va. is to Ky. The Cats never got into that area

The strong programs in GA have the feeder system running the same offense and defense all the way down to 8 year Olds. Same terminology to a certain extent.

Something that has come along since I retired, at least I wasn't aware of it, is travel football teams, full pads the whole 9 yards.
