Imo unjustified but s pretty big miss to not have a scouted response to that game winning play. Like Andy said, they used that multiple times last Superbowl so they thought the niners would be ready for it, which is why the last play was actually supposed to counter that tendency by being a shovel.
Instead they didn't cover it so it was easy TD.
Jmo but if you're finding scapegoats, it should be the special teams guy. Major punt issue on the short punt, blocked ep and a missed blocked FG on a super low kick. Total of 13 point difference.
It was never a good hire. They were forcing him to continue their style of defense, which was foreign to him, and it never worked.
He never fit in with the squad. Halfway through the year they made him go to the sidelines instead of staying in the pressbox. Shanahan used a timeout in OT because he didn't like the look of the defense that Wilkls put on the field.
