By Southern Miss. UK has signed a home-and-home deal. Southern Miss will play at Kentucky to start the 2016 season, UK will play @ Southern Miss to start the 2017 season.

Replacing one C-USA team with another. Should be a good series. I know we don't recruit Miss high schools too much. But could help with the Miss JUCOs.

Monken is currently digging them out of a hole. He may have them heading in the right direction come 2016/17. May be a good series.

0-12,1-11,3-9 - they are improving, but they are also bad. I am just fine with that.

The state of Mississippi produces excellent football players. I am not sure if its still the case, but a couple years ago, based on population the state of Mississippi produced more NFL players than any other, they just don't have a large population. But they produce some talented guys, most are taken by the Mississippi schools, but LSU, Bama and Arkansas come in and occasionaly pull a top kid out of there. Southern Miss was pretty good several years back, but a couple of coaching changes and things went way south, you guys know what that does to a program. Irony is, UAB has found some financial support and wants to start their program back up.

UK's has good "ins" with MS JUCOs. They signed 2 DL from Pearl this year, Brumbaugh coached at EMS CC and are recruiting others in the region. Doubt this was done for recruiting purposes tho.

Brumbaugh coached at a CC just north of there about 2 hrs. Soooo, we do have some connections to the area.

Dawson can reconnect with Trickett down there as well, being that Trickett is a coach at a CC down there.
If nothing else, it offers the opportunity to let families from Mississippi players that go to UK, to actually go to a game and watch.

I like it, not a Power 5 team, but at least not a total worthless scrimmage either, e.g., Murray State or Alabama State. They do have a bit of history, and some good football players from Southern Miss.

I am thrilled that for the first time an SEC team other than OM/MSU is coming to Hattiesburg. There was this negative rumor of a bunch of excuses why SEC couldn't come to Hattiesburg. Thank you UK for destroying that.

UofL has a pretty long (mostly losing) history with USM. They had a pretty strong program under Curley Hallman and Jeff Bower back in the 80s and through the 90s. They always played a couple of national powers (including Alabama, GA, AU, TN always on the road and seldom disgraced themselves. They were competitive enough with Ole Myth and MSU that those schools dropped the series. Their best teams in the 90s were very old school smash mouth offensive and defensive football teams.

When Bower retired they made a good hire in Larry Fedora in 2008 who got them back to a 12-2 mark in 2012 then went to UNC. Wheels totally came off after that and Monken is slowly bringing them back. Cats should be OK in this 2 game series but I'm surprised they went for a home and home. If Monken can continue to build their program they will likely be sky high for that 2017 opener in Hattiesburg.

Peace

I would like more games vs UL as well . UL made a great AD hire in 1999 with Jurich, but USM a poor hire with Richard Giannini. Jurich helped UL reach great heights, while our former AD wasted what was great momentum during the 1980s and 1990s. The final death knell was Ellos Johnson, going from 12-2 to 0-12. USM is still trying to recover.

2016 will be 30 years since Southern Miss' last visit to Commonwealth. UK won that one 32-0.

Yeah I hope the team is better stocked by next year and can put up a good game. Personally I'm sick of playing FCS schools and would rather play big name teams from big name conferences. UK and the LSU games should be great in 2016. I'm glad that USM's latest AD is willing to play big name teams once again. This season USM is requiring a season ticket for the MSU game and would be wise to put a premium on the UK game in 2017. USM hasn't hosted a big name team in a while but there have been some some heavyweights over the years: FSU, Texas A&M, Nebraska, MSU, Illinois,Cal, Okie State.

I was in school at the time and attended that game. I remember that it rained for much of the game.

Wish we didn't have to play them in Hattiesburg in 2017, but the non-P5 and FCS schools have more leverage than most people think. So be it.

No reason why UK is playing a home-and-home with Southern Miss. I could see a 2-for-1, but home-and-home is a mistake.

Perhaps because they want to get into a home and home series with someone else. OOC games are schedule fillers. If it's SoMiss or whoever...

If they were going to do this, they should've tried to schedule Marshall. I know for the longest time Marshall wanted a 1-1 with UK

Teams are starting to demand a return game. I'd say we got this game because @so miss isn't as bad as toledo or something. But we might buy out the return game.

The UofL-Southern Miss rivalry was a pretty good one in basketball and football. My two memories of the football rivalry was Brett Favre's Hail Mary that beat us in 1990, and the 2012 flood game. I'm sure UK fans hope that field has been fixed for better water drainage.

The Southern Miss football field was replaced due to the 2013 EF4 tornado. You can see more about that tornado on TWC.
I am really stoked about this series and certainly wouldn't mind more games with UL either. I haven't followed UK football very much so I'll be doing my homework. It seems to me that UK wants to be a force in their league with a man named Stoops and the stadium renovation. When I was a student at USM, I remember hearing Tim Couch's name mentioned a lot. Other than that I also enjoyed watching a big QB named Jared Lorenzin(sp)? doing things I didn't think was possible.

Next year I expect UK to at minimum to have a physically opposing team, that if nothing else could have the ability to wear down opponents. I was looking for UK latest recruiting class and would be curious to know how things turned out. Two SEC games next year and two more in 2017. I'm glad my alma mater is once again taking on the SEC and finally a couple of those SEC games(MSU this year and UK next year) in Hattiesburg. There was a time when USM had only four home games and played 3 or 4 road games vs the SEC. People will come to the Rock to see the Eagles take on the likes of MSU, UK, NU, A&M.

I am very happy to see this home and home with USM. I remember in the past when we played home and home series with teams like, Kansas, Tulane, UNC, Indiana, Kansas State, Maryland, Clemson and Baylor. We didn't win them all by any means, but we held our own against them.

I have to admit growing up in SEC country meant that like it or not, success was measured on how well a team could do against SEC competition. I haven't kept up with UK football as much as other SEC teams, but having that SEC patch on the uniform typically meant top notch players and a good record versus must non conference competition. I feel similarity about this game as games with Nebraska,A&M, and Ok State..to be the best you must schedule to play the best.
