Just looking to break the mood here.

So, who else sees an eerie resemblance to Cal's 1996 UMass team in the Kentucky team shaping up for next year:

Guards:
Travieso Ulis
Padilla Briscoe

Both pairs of guards are a bit undersized but are terrifically talented and capable of scoring from outside or setting up the interior.

Center:
Marcus Camby Skal Labissiere

Camby was more experienced. But when I see Skal play, Camby is who comes to mind. And in today's game, unlike 1996, most of the top players are freshmen or sophomores. There isn't a rival team like Kentucky or Syracuse packed with seniors, outside of maybe UNCheats.

Forwards
Donte Bright Alex Poythress
Dana DIngle Marcus Lee

The resemblance is damn close here. Supremely athletic guys without much offense outside of attacking the basket, but very good at that. Good rebounders, excellent defenders.

Bench
I expect Cal to add a thick player inside to take the Tyrone Weeks role. Beyond that, UK 2016 has a better array of players to substitute, including Matthews and Mulder and Willis

That 1996 team was one of my favorite non-UK teams ever. Really blew out some good teams, like teh Allen Iverson Georgetown Team, and gave a great Kentucky team headaches. It fit Cal's style of play perfectly. I think in some ways he's always been looking for a team that had those parts. Well, he may have one next year.

That team was led by the consensus NPOY in Camby and their regular 6 players consisted of 6 guys that played together for at least 3 years by playing 3 seniors and 3 juniors. That is a huge advantage and the biggest difference. Who knows how our guys will play together as a team...that 96 UMASS squad was a great team. Maybe not great individual players all around, but damn, they were a very good team. Their OOC schedule was brutal too and they went undefeated OOC. Their OOC schedule that year consisted of 7 ranked teams. Only 1 of their OOC opponents was not in a major conference.

I'd be thrilled if it turns out that way. Should make for an entertaining season... and if a couple balls-bounce-our-way, they could make a deep run in March.

Does Skal have Camby's little fall-back 8-foot jumper? That is almost unstoppable.
