UNC Wilmington v. Kentucky (Game 1)

I’ll be charging up the Bluegrass Parkway in about an hour. Anxious to see how deep Ramsey will go in the game today. Need to see him start getting more than four innings.

Go Cats!

This game will not be a walk in the park. UNCW has some solid talent. I think this should be a pretty decent barometer on the improvements we've made since week 1.

Here is how UK will look:

Daniel - CF
Harmon - DH
Collett - 1B
Schultz - RF
Rhodes - LF
Golda - SS
Holen - C
Lewis - 2B
Estep - 3B
Ramsey - P

Start with controversy right off the bat. Grounder behind the pitcher and Golda picks it up and kind of pushes it to first. Umpire calls the runner out, but I think he is safe. They are looking at it now. UNCW has a rowdy group behind the dugout.

They did call the runner safe on that one. Another soft grounder. This one to Estep at third. The throw is a bit errant and they will give UK another error on the season. Not sure if that is going on Estep or on Collett, but runners at the corners with 0 outs.

They call that a base hit with an error on the throw that allowed the runner to move to third. Collett got his glove on it, but they gave the E to Estep for the throw being a bit wide.

Grounder through the right side of the infield past Collett scores a run. 1-0 UNCW.

No real hard hits, but three singles in a row that just were tough plays.

UK got really lucky on a 1-2 pitch that was right down the middle. It was fouled off instead of being a home run on the leadoff pitcher. The at bat ends up a strikeout. The strikeout pitch was again largely right down the middle. Hitter possibly wasn't seeing Jimmy very well.

Single up the middle gives UNCW another run. Ramsey struggling to paint the black and is just throwing middle/middle.

Ramsey gets another strikeout. He's doing a pretty decent job keeping hitters off balance and not allowing them to sit on his stuff. If he can just keep them out of the middle of the plate then he will be golden.

Easy grounder right back to Ramsey ends the UNCW first. 2 runs off of 4 hits with 1 UK error.

Cats can have a big day today. Wind is blowing hard, so Cats just need to get the ball into the air and take advantage of mistake pitches. The UNCW starter is pretty solid though. Was a 19th round draft pick by the St. Louis Cardinals a year ago.

Sharpe had a perfect game through 7 innings a week ago. Carries a 1.54 ERA through 11.2 innings with 14 walks and 2 walks. He will throw from the left side and touch the lower 90s with the fastball.

Daniel watches one at the knees for strike number 3 to start the UK bottom half. Just a straight outside at the knees fastball. Great pitch.

Harmon grounds out to short. Again, just another good pitching job by this senior.

Collett swings at some high stuff around the arm pits and he pops it up to shallow center. The shortstop takes it and ends the 1st.

2-0 UNCW going to 2.

Golda takes a one hopper at short and makes a solid play to get out number one. Ramsey does an excellent job stabbing a chopper up the middle and he escorts it to first with an underhanded toss to Collett for the second out. Collett then takes a high chopper to the bag himself for out three.

Very good inning for Ramsey. Very few wasted pitches.

2-0 UNCW going to bottom 2

Infield single to short for Schultz. Good hustle for him to beat that throw by a half step. Rhodes drives one and it is just an excellent strike on the ball, but it hangs up just enough for the left fielder to get it on a dive for the first out.

Schultz took an early jump and they should have had him dead to rights, but Schultz slides in just barely safe. A better throw by the first baseman gets him easily.

Well, Schultz allowed the good luck to run out as Golda skies one into right and Schultz takes off on the hit and gets doubled off at second after the ball is caught. A mental mistake.

2-0 UNCW going to the 3rd.

Baserunning mistake there or was that another straight steal?

Again, won't show up as an error but just another sign that this team isn't mentally on top of it. Schultz doesn't know how many outs there are and runs from second on a fly out and gets doubled off.

Facing the leadoff man once again and Ramsey starts him off with back to back swinging strikes. Seems like JRam has really settled into the game now after that rough first inning. One ball before a beautiful paint the black on the outside corner at the knees fastball. Got him looking.

Ground ball between second and first has some seeing eyes and goes for a single.

I don't think it was a straight steal. It was on a 2-2 count, so not a great count to steal on. It could have been, but there is certainly that risk that the hitter has to swing to not give up the out.

Ramsey gets his 4th strikeout of the game. Another one down and away.

JRam leaves one a bit too much in the middle and it goes for a single to right. UNCW tests the arm and goes from first to third on the single. Runners at the corners with 2 outs.

Strikeout for Ramsey to end the top of the third. Kind of up and down in that inning, but no damage done.

2-0 UNCW going to bottom 3.

We need to get a few good at bats, Only 22 pitches for their pitches in two innings.

So what do we do? 6 pitches that inning.

Holen skies one into right-center that is taken by the right fielder for the first out. UK needs to keep testing the guy in right, he looks extremely shaky on defense, Kind of little league looking.

Lewis puts down a decent bunt, but the lefty coming off the mound gets to it quickly and beats Lewis for the second out. If the pitcher is on the other side it is easily safe with Lewis being out of the left-handed box and pitcher going off the other side of the mound.

Strikeout ends the inning.

Quick one there for UK hitters.

2-0 UNCW going to the 4th.

Gabriel lets us know that Jaren Shelby is day-to-day. Flynn thinks he should be back this weekend.

Ramsey gets another strikeout. He threw I believe 5 strikes and zero balls on that at bat, with the strikeout pitch being out of the zone and making the hitter look foolish.

Golda dives for one, but it is just out of his reach and through the hole between him and third for a one out single.

9 hole hitter now up, and he makes UK and Ramsey pay with a soft liner over Golda and into right center to put runners on the corners.

Ramsey's off speed stuff looks pretty good today. Just needs to locate that fastball a bit better.

Sometimes it is excellent, but there are times even the off speed stuff is just being left up too much. He needs to bury it a bit more and get that change up around the knees instead of the belt.

A bunt attempt for the leadoff man, but it goes foul. Whew... Holen saves a run with a sliding catch on his knees to keep the ball from getting to the backstop. Swinging away now. JRam now up to 80 pitches in this at bat with a 2-2 count. This kid is battling. Wild pitch gets away from Holen and it scores a run. Hitter tried to take first on it, but the umpire calls him back. They will look and discuss this a bit to decide whether it is a dead ball and a HBP or if it is a WP that scores a run.

Replay doesn't show it hitting him to me. I think this is a run for UNCW. They will take a look at it, but I don't see it hitting him.

They are calling this a run for UNCW... there is some confusion, but they are saying the pitch did not hit the batter. It is full count and 3-0 UNCW. 1 out.

Ball four. Runners at second and first now. UK getting both a lefty and a righty going in the bullpen.

Ramsey starts the next hitter with a very good rib-high fastball that is in, but he doesn't get the strike call, so he ends up falling behind 2-0 before he gets a grounder to 3rd. Estep may have been able to get the force out at third, but he decides to just get the force at first. Not sure why he didn't step on the bag there, that is a bit of a mental error, IMO.

Ramsey gets the next man to pop up out to left and Rhodes takes it, can of corn, to end the top of the 4th

3-0 UNCW.

Wondering the same thing. Couldn't have gotten the double play but at least the lead runner. Mentally not aware.

Daniel gets a pitch to drive, but it looked like he got it off the end of the bat and it goes as a dying quail out to center. They are really working the outside on Harmon, and he too gets one off the end of the bat, but this one to right for a second out.

Collett smashes one past the diving first baseman for a single. Finally a mistake pitch and UK does something with it.

Schultz swings at the first pitch and grounds out to second. He makes a good run at stealing the single, but is ultimately thrown out.

End of 4th, 3-0 UNCW.

I don't know. It was kind of strange. He started that way and then changed his mind. Not sure why he changed his mind. Could have been that he was just thinking that it was the third out. The whole situation with that inning was strange.

HBP on the first pitch of the 5th. Cottongame working. Ramsey still in the game. They are reviewing this HBP.
