UK in contact with Minnesota’s PG Hawkins

Its hard to get back ups from the transfer portal. These kids are transferring to be starters, not a back up option.
Which makes it tough on Pope since he’s not really getting to recruit a Freshman class. If he somehow pulls McNeeley though it’ll make up for that big time. Most years he’ll get involved with Kentucky HS players. Bring in Mr. Basketball on scholarship. Some years that’s gonna be a bench contributor, most times these days it’s a D1 level talent. Even if KY Mr. Basketball is only walk-on level, you sign them on scholly out of tradition. Bring in other in state D1 talent and that typically going to fill your bench roles. Mix that in with a 5 star, and a couple 3/4 star development pieces every year, it hopefully lowers the transfer rate and instills a culture around the program.

Agreed. If start talking about bench players from the portal, then people on the boards here will start talking about how we "dodged a bullet" because they weren't starter-quality.

I agree for the most part. However, as the coach, I think the sell is

  1. A detailed plan of how you would use the talents the player already possesses AND how you would further develop his strengths and weaknesses.
  2. A chance to play with other top players (which takes pressure off of you individually, allowing your abilities to shine even more), which should prepare you for the NBA when you are ready... whether that be 1-4 years is TBD
  3. A chance to cash in with exposure/NIL money from the major brand of UK
  4. A chance to compete for a starting job at a premiere program (UK in our case, but this would apply at other places as well)

I'm not saying this would work for every kid, but point #1 must be the thing that would set you apart considering 2-3 can be offered elsewhere, and some coaches may promise a starting job.

I wonder what's going on with Small the Oklahoma State guard?Haven't heard anything about him for some time.

1. This kid is a 4 inch taller Tyler Ulis type. you dont need super studs at all 5 positions to win a title. so take him,
2. Pope has proven he loves to play a lot of players ala Pitino's 90 teams.. so the starting PG and backup PG will both get minutes
3. Have we ever gone wrong with a Hawkins before?
4. You have to reset your brain back to the 90's , PG's arent going to be the best players on the team ... Pope is a Pitino disciple where they prefer the true PG's who pass first but are also efficient scorers for when they're open

Problem is what studs do we have at other positions right now?

Offer him 1 million, and let’s get this guy sealed up and signed to Arkansas for 2 million.

He’d be a Sahvir Wheeler 2.0 under Cal.

Pope might be able to use a guy like this, he might be looking for a true PG because it seems like we’re going to have a team full of wings that can shoot 3s.

I agree with your second statement, but regarding your first, it's not that difficult. Pope just isn't focused on that at all right now.

There is a ton of players just looking for a better opportunity. Look at Missouri, they are losing Lewis, Carralero, Bulter, and Tonje. Those are all bench guys. Ole Miss - Losing Murray, Marshall, Barnes, Gazzo...same thing. Tennessee - Awaka, Jefferson, Dillone.
