In a traveling baseball tourney 13U up in Indiana this weekend we had two umpires that hated each other. Each would bad mouth the other to the kids inviting a response. Our kids NEVER talk back to the umps and reported it to the coach. They didn't know whether to answer the field ump on "how bad the home plate guy was calling balls and strikes " or the home plate ump on "boy he blew that one at second didn't he"

Then between innings the umps started talking to the coaches separately bad mouthing each other.

Then between games one of the umps came back before the other one and started telling us fans how irresponsible the other ump was for not being back on time so we could start the game early.

I have never seen such a circus. Thought I had seen it all.

I have seen a lot of crazy things, but don't think I have seen that. One of my favorites was when my older brother, who was probably about 13, was playing traveling baseball and a mom of one of his teammates took exception to a call made by the umpire. This woman went off (mind you this woman is a special education teacher) and the umpire had an extremely short fuse. He turned around and told her to go back to her trailer park. I about lost it. They had to call the police and she was escorted away from the field.

One more... I was an umpire to make a bit of extra money. I did it when I was 14 until I was about 17 or 18. One day I was umpiring a minor league game and one team had a big lead. Well, the other team rallied in the last inning to win it. During the entire game the coach that was winning was very happy with me and had no problems with my strikezone. Once he lost he just lost it. He chased me down as I was walking back to the umpire room and started to cuss me out. I stood there and listened for a minute and then I pointed to the man standing behind him listening to it all and said, "If you really have a problem you might want to take it up with him. He's the league commissioner." The guy's face turned pale. I was told the guy would never be able to coach another team in the league again, but sure enough he had a team in little league the next year. I think he volunteered a lot of time and paid a lot of money to get back into good graces.

Have had grown men softball umps hate each other, but never heard of umps bad talking each other to young kids.

Blew my lid once during a HS game while coaching...tossed, cops called the whole deal. I was just so mad that High school umpires being paid a decent amount didn't know the rules...wasn't mad with judgement calls or strike zones ever...after I was tossed, standing near the pitchers mound some loud mouth moms from the other team were yelling at me that I should be tossed - I yell back im already tossed and continue on...embarrassing, but so pissed that they were making $ and screwing my guys because they had no idea of the rules.

Had another moment that was really funny for an umpire...my freshman team was on defense and they had a guy on 3rd leave WAYYYY early, 2-3 steps early before tagging up...this time I go to calmly argue, the umpires response "I do JV and varsity games, you think I would miss a call?" Say what? lol

Only tossed once as a player...top of 1st, im batting 3 hole in high school summer ball...catcher picks out called strike 2 from the dirt, I get to think uh oh...next pitch is about the same thing, ump rings me up...I say "that's 2" (as in bad strike calls), he says "that's 2?, youre outta here" Pretty LAME IMO.

Also, when I was like 12/13 umpiring fall ball machine pitch, I called a kid safe at 1st because the 1b trapped the ball and pick it up...had a dad that was coaching for the team that the call went against yell at me and tell me that's why you wont play high school ball - guess he kind of knew my family from the park, I would be attending the same high school as his son who was a couple years older...

How weird can grown ups be about a game?

AND for the record, I can say this because when I got tossed I didn't use a cuss word or personal insult...I got entirely too angry, but not personal or vulgar.
