There is no question there is a UK Coaching Cycle. It goes like this....

Great > Good > Drunk > Great > Good > Drunk.

I think there is a potential that the UK Coaching Cycle veered off its traditional path. What Coaching Cycle do you think makes more sense now that we have Mark Pope as our coach?

Traditional Coaching Cycle
Rupp = Great
Hall = Good
Sutton = Drunk
Pitino = Great
Tubby = Good
Gillispie = Drunk
Cal = Great
Pope = Good

OR

Deviated Coaching Cycle
Rupp = Great
Hall = Good
Sutton = Drunk
Pitino = Great
Tubby = Good
Gillispie = Drunk
2009-2015 Cal = Great
2016-2020 Cal = Good
2021-2024 Cal = Drunk on Ego
Pope = Great

I am hoping for the Deviated Coaching Cycle of course. Only time will tell. What do you think holds true to the cycle? Which version?

I was kind of hoping Cal would have been driven to the bottle for just a short amount of time, nothing too serious. But then we could have had Cal be great, good, drunk all in one coach and jumped right to the next great coach.

I’m hoping Cal’s split tenure makes Pope great too.

it went:

* HOF coach (Rupp) - Asst to that coach (Hall)- to someone who couldn't handle the program and drank to much (Sutton)
* HOF coach (Pitino) - Asst to that coach (Smith) - to someone who couldn't handle the program and drank to much (Billy G)
* HOF coach (CAL) -

Sadly, Cal never developed asst's to take on head coaching positions. What I would like to see happen is Pope hold on to Tyler Ulis and bring him up the ranks. Have Ulis take a head coaching position down the road and then take over after Pope has a HOF career.
