In terms of likelihood, it’s looking like Drew is easily the most likely candidate to be the next coach. Wanted to list some of these outs to put things in perspective:
Cons:
- Inconsistent in NCAA tournament (4 round two losses in last 6 years)
- Bit of a boring personality, could run into some struggles engaging boosters and fans
- Has been quoted saying resorting to the transfer portal means he hasn’t “done his job”
- Defense seems to have fallen off quite a bit since Jerome Tang left. (5 years with Tang: 23, 75, 4, 22, 13……..2 years w/o Tang: 107, 85)
Pros:
- Won a national championship after reviving a dead program
- Roster construction leans towards what we want (vets mixed w/ a couple freshman)
- Has showcased a high hit rate so far in terms of portal evaluations
- On the younger side at age 53
- Shown an ability to evolve, some articles exhibited an offensive scheme evolution throughout his tenure leading to consistent top 10-15 kenpom offenses
- Known to live & breathe basketball, X’s and O’s and game planning type guy
- Program first mentality
- High level recruiting ability
- Will be a good ambassador for the program
- Can put together a team for next year fairly easily
