Apparently, SB Nation wasn't counting the 3rd round and below draft picks in 1986 and 1987. In 1987, Amaker was drafted 55th in the 3rd round, and Nessley was drafted 116th in the 6th round. For UK, Blackmon was drafted 94th in the 5th round in 1986, and in 1987 it was Lock at 51, Davender at 60, and Bennett at 64, all in the 3rd round.

So the current, updated totals (including 3rd round picks and below) are:

Total draft picks since 1987
Duke- 43
Kentucky- 46

Total 1st round picks since 1987
Duke- 29
Kentucky- 31

Total Lottery picks since 1987
Duke- 20
Kentucky- 17

* If we went back to 1984, we would add Bowie, Turpin and Walker to the Lottery picks, while Duke had none in those previous three years
* Avery for Duke and Chapman for UK both were drafted one spot out of the lottery

Just for fun, here is the comparison from 1987 through 2009 (the pre-Cal era):

Total draft picks 1987-2009
Duke- 31
Kentucky- 21

Total 1st round picks 1987-2009
Duke- 19
Kentucky- 12

Total Lottery picks 1987-2009
Duke- 15
Kentucky- 4

I bet Duke has more NBA duds than UK.
They do.

A few days ago, I posted about how many guys from different schools have gone on to play 500 games in the NBA. It's one thing to put guys into the draft, it's another to have guys who have real, lengthy, NBA careers. UCLA was 1st with 28, UNC had 27, and UK 22. Duke only had 16.

I have 0 idea why the "modern era" starts in 87 (was that the year the writer was born?), but using that, the number of drafted guys from each school who've hit that 500 game mark is UK 11, Duke 13. However, with the current players that UK has in the league that are established stars or rotation players but haven't hit 500 games yet, vs the number that Duke has, it's only going to be a few more years before UK goes flying past Duke on that total. Meeks, Patterson, Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe, Knight, Jones, and AD are all mortal locks to play 500 as long as they have no tragic injury issues, whereas Duke really only has Henderson, Irving, and maybe Josh McRoberts.
