Kentucky @ Elon (Opening Day)

Anyone know beforehand which radio station the game is gonna be on. Usually on 630 WLAP or 98.5 Bull Icons.

Not sure yet. However, they should be doing a pre-game show 15 minutes prior to the first pitch. At least, I think that is what they do.

Waldy fell behind 0-2 but worked it into a walk with 4 straight balls. That is pretty big as Elon was great at keeping runners off the bases by way of walk in 2022. McCoy also falls behind 0-2 as well, and then he grounds into a 6-4-3 double play. Burkes swings at the second pitch and flies out to center to end the UK 1st.

0-0 after half an inning.

Martin starts off with a 5 pitch strikeout of Berry. Then the Vandy transfer Mallory gets a wicked hop over at third on the first pitch that gets past Byars for a hit. Granatell then hits one through the left side to move everyone up a bag. Stephenson up, he's their home run threat. UK putting on a big shift and the left side is pretty much vacant, as it was when Granatell hit one through that side. Three breaking balls in a row puts down Stephenson. Grounder to short that Smith takes himself to second to end the Elon 1st.

0-0 after one.

Pitre also falls behind 0-2 before grounding out to second. A tough play for their second baseman, but he makes it for the first out. Sprague for Elon really filling up the strike zone as he strikes out Gilliam looking. He has also started all but one hitter out with a strike, and he does the same with Ewell. Ewell also goes down looking in the second as Sprague makes really quick work of the middle of the Cats order.

0-0 going to the bottom of 2.

As mentioned, Holliman gave Elon the lead with a solo shot. Martin then battles back and gets his own looking K at the knees. Haskin works a full count and fouls off a couple pitches for a good at bat that ends in a 1 out walk. Burkes out to settle down Martin a bit. 9 hole, Coolahan up and Haskin beats a high throw to get a stolen base. As mentioned, Elon likes to move those runners when they can. Coolahan then flies one to McCarthy that isn't deep enough to advance the runner. Berry at the top of the lineup fans at strike three to end the Elon 2nd.

Cats down 0-1 as we go to the third.

If I am counting correct I think that Martin has already thrown 39 pitches through just 2 innings of work. If, and that is a big if, that is correct then he might have a short outing today given that number and given that it is early in the season.

Byars tries to bunt for a hit and Elon is ready for it and it goes 5-3 for the first out. McCarthy gets a single into right for the first UK hit of the 2023 season. McCarthy goes too early and he gets caught stealing 1-3-4 for the second out. Smith gets hit by a 2-1 pitch to keep the inning alive. Sprague maybe a touch rattled by that hit batter as he falls behind 3-0 before finally grabbing a strike, and then getting Waldy to foul out with a pop up behind the plate. UK finally gets a hit and a base runner, but can't do anything with it and we're going to the bottom of the third.

Elon up 1-0 going to the bottom 3.

Martin starts the inning with a lot of strikes he gets ahead 0-2, but has to throw 5 pitches to get a fly out to Waldy in left. Next pitch is a comebacker right off of Martin that Pitre can't pick up and it goes for a one out single. UK keeping Granatell close and I think the focus on him leads Martin to hit Stephenson with the first pitch. Runners at second and third with one out. UK bullpen comes alive a bit as Roszel goes out for a short word. Seeing eye single gets into left to score another run for Elon as the throw from Waldy to the plate is late. Pop fly into center gets Holliman for the second out of this frame. Strikeout to end the inning.

2-0 Elon

McCoy lines a 2 strike offering into center for a base hit. Burkes put a good bat on one, but right at the left fielder for the first out. Pitre hits into a tailor-made 4-6-3 double play to end the UK 4th.

2-0 Elon going to the bottom of the 4th.

UK bullpen is awake, but no one really taking serious warmups. Haskin with a strong at bat as he sees 6 pitches before he grounds out to third. Byars over there put it in the turf, but Gilliam dug it out for the first out. Pitch count keeps creeping up as Elon hitters seem to be getting a piece of a lot of pitches. Both the first hitters saw 7 pitches, but Martin sat the both down, the second one with a looking K. UK does finally get its first clean inning of the day here in the 4th as it ends with a pop out to shallow center and Smith takes it.

2-0 Elon going to the 5th.

Gilliam takes the first pitch off the end of the bat into center for a single before Ewell strikes out. Gilliam then gets picked off for the second out. Ugh... twice in one game... that is not ideal. Byars then pops up into shallow right and the second baseman takes it to end the UK 5th. UK squanders a leadoff single.

2-0 Elon going to B5.

Martin still out there going into the B5.

Okay, I missed a whole lot because I had to work and couldn't listen. Williams now on the mound for UK.

I believe we're in the 6th with 1 out, Williams got a K. Score still 2-0.

Byars not particularly having a great debut over at third as he misplayed a hop earlier and this time one goes under the glove for a 1 out error.

Another stolen base for Elon, that is 2 for 2 on the day so far. Vergantino then draws a full count walk to put 2 on for Elon with 1 out. UK out to talk with the whole infield meeting on the mound. Haskin is first pitch swinging and it is a foul out to Byars at third. Williams gets another strikeout to end the frame for Elon and kill the threat.

2-0 going to the 7th

Burkes now up for his third at bat, he's flown out a couple of times. Sprague now pushing 80 pitches, so I imagine that this will be his last inning regardless. That might be a good sign for UK as they'll at least get 2 innings against the Elon bullpen. Burkes works a full count with a great at bat, spoiling off at least 3 pitches so far. Burkes works it for a walk. Elon fans sound a bit upset about that low pitch being called a ball. Sprague will come out of this one and UK has finally broken through to the Phoenix bullpen.

Dabagian will be the reliever. Another lefty. Liam Dabagian is a lefty redshirt junior who appeared in 21 and started 1 with a 3.21 ERA. He walked just 7 in 128 at bats and opponents hit .266 against him.

Pitre looks like he's trying to play some small ball, and he does. He bunts and the sac works. He nearly legs it out, but it does go for the out. Can't say that I hate that move, but Pitre is your 4 hole... which is still weird. Gilliam swings first pitch and grounds out to third, which keeps Burkes right there at second. Ewell also swings at the first one and grounds out to third just as Gilliam did. UK leaves one stranded, the first one to reach second in this one.

Going to the B7 with Elon leading 2-0.

Williams back out for a second inning, so UK not keeping a horribly short leash on him. I believe that to this point, Elon has left something like 7+ on base and UK has only had 1 clean inning. Berry struggling in the leadoff role as he gets rung up. Williams then records another, his 4th in 5 outs. You can hear the Northeastern influence coming to play from the accent of at least one of the Elon fans in attendance. Williams has to work and throw 8 pitches, but it ends in a K as he strikes out the Elon side in the bottom of the 7th.

2-0 Elon going to 8

Byars starts the 8th by flying out to right. UK trying to feature the bunt today some as McCarthy shows bunt, but he pulls back and looks at a strike. He then grounds one to short that Vergantino sails into the Elon dugout to give McCarthy an extra bag. Runner at second for the second straight inning for UK. Smith then flies out to the second baseman in shallow right. Waldy turns the lineup over and he gets ahead 2-0 before Elon evens it back up at 2-2, and the next pitch he takes one to center just short of the warning track that finds a glove to end the UK threat.

2-0 Elon going to B8.
