Zagoria: After proclaiming itself the best league in the country, the Big East has largely fallen on its face to start the season

They thought they were the best league? Looks like all of the mid major type schools transfers come from outside the top two or three programs.

I mean looking at Kenpom ranks

4 teams in the Top 10
13 teams in the Top 50 and the ones outside of that are 54th, 71st and 76th

There are basically no easy games in conference. Playing Vandy and USC (the two current worst teams) on the road, even the top SEC teams will be just slight favorites.

I used to really enjoy watching the “old” Big East, back in the mid to late 90s. Those AI/Ray Allen duels were a treat to watch, especially in 1996. Of course, we had the best team in the country that season! What a year!
Yeah I grew up outside Syracuse and absolutely loved the old Big East. Almost every game there was bad blood, intense rivalry. Was such a strong league too, after the mass departures though it just isn’t anywhere close to what it was.

Also, you had Kerry Kittles at Nova and then Syracuse was also real good. They made the title game in 1996, of course. Good old days!

To be fair they had won 4 of the last 8 titles. Nova and UConn. i guess you can say it was the best at the very top but not the conference as a whole

Exactly.

That just meant they had some very good teams with Uconn and Nova. It doesn't say much about the conference as a whole.

They've gone deep into the league getting teams into the tournament too since forming this new incarnation too. Marquette. Providence. Xavier. All have been fairly regular NCAAT teams, and while Butler has dropped off, St. John's is now competitive again under Pitino. I don't know if they're "the best," but they're legit.
