I think, in this case, Poy would be better coming off the bench. Substitute Lee for Willis instead, at least to start the game.

Someone has to guard Jefferson. I don't see Willis doing that. Id rather see him on the perimeter.

Willis is avg. 12.5 ppg which is 3rd on the team and yet he is logging only the 6th most minutes at but 22.5.

He leads the team in 3 pointers made with 5 and is 5 of 9 from downtown overall.

His D has been very good, he feeds the post well, rebounds and blocks shots.

He brings great size at 6'9 and athleticism, can run the floor and jump high.

After 2 gms you could argue he is the best overall player on this team.

Think about it....in the 6th most amount of mins.
Cal aint stupid....Willis starts v Duke

Until Willis shows he is a defensive liability he needs to start.I cannot see how anybody would suggest Briscoe over Willis after the first two games.

Briscoe started with 11 with 12 boards. The dude balled. He was one our second best player yesterday, only behind Skal. If he can rebound like that, he needs to play.

However, i won't mind Willis starting either. He's been playing pretty well.

You just can't go with the 3 guard line-up AND Willis.

Guessing for sure, but right now

Ulis
Murray
Willis
Lee
Skal

Willis is our only true SF, I like him as a starter. Our bench is awesome. You have Poythress as an enforcer, leader and finisher. Briscoe brings you toughness and instant offense. Matthews needs to embrace the role of being a lockdown perimeter defender for 15 minutes a game and just bring energy. He's done that so far, just needs to step it up a level. Then Humphries is a big body, high IQ player, not really an athlete but skilled and forces you to guard him. I think he is already a better basketball player than Dakari Johnson. Hawkins is steady, I don't think he'll ever play a role like Willis has the opportunity to, but he is a good bit player and deserves 8 minutes a game. I think Mulder is our zone buster, seems to be the odd man out right now, he'll play a situational role like Hawkins and may not average more than 5 or 6 minutes a game. We have 11 guys that can play, making us one of the deepest if not the deepest team in terms of talent off the bench, once again.

I would go Ulis, Briscoe, Murray, Lee, and Labissiere.

Now according to the box score Duke is starting Allen, Jones, Ingram, Jefferson, and Plumlee. Not sure who is running the point for them with that lineup (I assume Thornton comes in pretty quickly into the game).

So that would create some interesting matchups for us on the defensive end:

Ulis vs. Jones- major size disadvantage for Ulis.
Briscoe vs. Allen- I like Briscoe's defense better than Murray thus far, I'd put him on their best guy.
Murray vs. Ingram- major size disadvantage for Murray.
Lee vs. Jefferson- should be a good matchup of experienced players.
Labissiere vs. Plumlee- strength disadvantage for Labissiere, but a major talent advantage.

Now offensively, Duke will have trouble with our quickness with that lineup. If Ingram has to guard any of our guards, he will likely struggle to stay in front of them.

I think Duke will have to counter our quickness and go with:

Thornton vs. Ulis
Allen vs. Briscoe
Jones vs. Murray
Ingram vs. Lee
Jefferson vs. Labissiere

I think that is the lineup K ultimately wants to go with anyway. I can't see Plumlee starting all season, but who know? I never thought Zoubek would start all year in 2010 and he turned out to be really good for them.

They might want to outmuscle us. I don't think they can out quick us.

K is going to have them ready, so it will be a tough game.

I think we win because of our pressure. Thornton is their only true PG and Ulis will be in his grill all game long. I think that will be the difference.

Poy ,Lee,Skal,Ulis and Murray

I really think UK needs Poythress for his rebounding and defense at the start of the game.He has played in lots of big games and Willis hasn't. I thought Willis played better when he came back in. He probably deserves to start but Willis might be better off the bench. Still too early to tell. Cal will figure it out.

If Allen is running the Point, then Ulis probably guards him. I haven't watched Duke yet, but someone else in another thread said that Allen was their starter at PG right now. So Ulis is likely on the ball to start the game as usual and so he'll guard Allen. Tough assignment for Ulis. But maybe equally as tough for Allen, though.

The way we shot it last night, K might sag off our guards and clog the lane. Dare us to shoot it. I don't think they will let us run.

Skal
Poythress
Murray
Briscoe
Ulis

I think Cal is going to challenge Alex to do what he did to Duke his freshman season? If he doesn't respond, I think he goes with Lee or maybe Willis.

You don't start Ulis, Briscoe, Murray, Willis and Skal vs Duke - that team can't get Duke off the boards. I think Willis plays more at the 3.

He will start Ulis, Briscoe, Murray, Lee and Skal. Poythress, Willis and Matthews off the bench. You watch though - we will need 2 of Lee, Skal and Poythress on the court at all times - or atleast 90% of the time.
