Would you have wanted Coach Rupp fired?

There's been lots of whining and crying about Coach Calipari and the fact that he's only brought home the bacon on one occasion during his 13 seasons as the head coach. Many on this board want him gone.

Let's put this into perspective ...

You've heard of Coach Rupp, haven't you? Coach Rupp led our Wildcats to NCAA titles in 1948, 1949 and 1951. He then went through a bit of a dry spell.

Coach Rupp retired after the '71/'72 season. During his last 21 years as head coach, UK made it to the Final Four on only two occasions (1958 and 1966) and won the NCAA crown only once (1958).

Now, compare that to Coach Calipari's four Final Four appearances (2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015) and title in 2012. Not too shabby for a 13-year period, eh?

So, was Coach Rupp fired for the lack of hardware during his 21-year "dry spell?" Nope. We named an arena after him.

Dry spells happen. Maybe we should let up on Coach Cal about it. We certainly didn't treat Rupp so roughly.

Nice try Ellen....good grief, the level of stupid in this post is quite remarkable

If Cal had four titles he could show up in a bath robe at that point and let his junk hang out. He’d have earned it. He could sit on the bench and light cigars. He’d have to really do something stupid to get fired at that point.

He has one. And hasn’t produced another one in 10 years. We got real close a couple of times and unlike some I’ll give credit for that. But the last seven years we’ve had two good shots. Maybe three. Not acceptable.

Let’s be honest. It was much easier to win titles back then. After he got the 4, which was impressive even in those times, his dry spell would have made some UK fans go crazy. By the end it would have been ugly.

Didn’t Rupp have 4 in like 42 years? So 1 every 10.5?

He earned four in 10 years. Yes after 58 it was clear the game was passing Rupp by. But again 4 titles earns you a lot of grace.

Had Cal pulled that one out in 2015 like we should’ve, there would be no debates who the best coach in college ball is.

But instead it goes to the retired rat bastard.

My Father wanted Rupp gone in the late 60’s, he said that the game was changing and Rupp wasn’t adapting to the changes very well. Sounds vaguely familiar?

Literally has happened to every UK coach not named Sutton or Billy Clyde. This is Cal’s last chance to show he’s got it.

So 31-32 years of not winning. I didn’t realize that.

The Calipari Brigade is in full melt down mode.
Don't EVER compare Rupp to Calipari. The two aren't even in the same Galaxy. One Coach BUILT the UKBB...the other is...well..."Hey look, the NBA Draft is coming up..
Probably a lot of way you can’t compare them.

The answer is most likely yes, many fans would. Of course they wouldn’t say it now because they view it like firing George Washington and there is mor symbolism attached.

Great question from OP by the way. Forces historical context.

Good lord, give it a rest.
Calipari ain't getting an arena named after him.
He’s counting 10 years against Rupp when the NCAA tourney didn’t exist or was less prestigious than the NIT.

True conversion rate for Rupp was ~1 title every 7 years. That’s including the 14 year drought that forced him into retirement.

Cal fans want to give him longer leash than any other coach has ever gotten here just because he won 1 title.

Hmmm, lets see how Cal's Brigade defends this...

So your throwing in the Covid year on your stats when nobody could win a title? Nice

Is a losing season the only criteria for a disgruntled fanbase or something? Fans are all about what have you done for me lately. Of course there would’ve been fans ready to see Rupp go. That’s how sports work.

Cal is paid 9 million a year. I suspect Rupp wasn’t paid a whole lot more than the average biology professor at UK back then. He also fielded teams that usually featured a lot of Kentucky kids, especially in the early years. Immensely different times.
