When the AP poll comes out soon

I hope we are #2 and UNC is #1,
because the last time we loss a final four game and the next season we were ranked #2 and UNC was #1 we won it all. Also that year they had three key players return from the final four team. This year we have 3 with Ulis, Poythress, and Lee

I think being No. 1 is too high depending how you look at the rankings. On paper, we're very talented, but we're young and will grow over the season. I don't see us as No. 1 right now, but think we will be by season's end.

huge advantage for seeding if true. i think many of us feel we will drop a few. we won't lose four in a row though and fall from the polls. so the higher you are the bigger cushion you have to remain a top three seed. just like college football, only to a lesser extent, ranking means a lot. with our schedule we will likely be the highest ranked team in the loss column all year. given we win a couple of the big ones. i think we will.

I like being ranked high. Nevertheless, it ultimately means nothing until seeding time. Just fodder for discussion and bragging rights.

Forget that loser mentality. I always want to be #1.

That's not a loser mentality. Being #1 to start means nothing. I want to be #1 come April. There aren't many good things that come from being #1 to start the season. I'd rather fly under the radar, as much as possible for a UK team, to allow this team to grow and get better without all the crazy expectations and pressure being put on their shoulders.

if being ranked #1 means nothing....what does being ranked #2 mean? since everyone seems to be want to be ranked there instead

Well if they do get ranked lower than what they( the team) thinks they should be, maybe they'll play with a chip on their shoulder and destroy everybody they play and not let up on the gas at the end until the game is over:boxing:

Geez, really?
OK, let me clarify for some people...being ranked #1 means nothing when it comes to the main prize. You don't win a ring for starting the season off on top. It can lead to added pressure that a young team trying to find their way can do without. There is nothing of any value for us from being in that #1 spot at the start of the season, . Honestly, did I really need to clarify this? I think it's kinda common sense actually.

but its also completely made up right. i mean...you have zero clue about whether these kids feel pressure or not. and thats my point...fans over analyze this stuff. how much less pressure is there being ranked #2 or #3? you think the guys walk around say...."wow...we are ranked #3 this week...no pressure here, feels great!"

this is just crap fans make up to make themselves feel better.

LMAO, UK flying under the radar is like saying you never noticed the giraffe at the midget's convention.
Makes no sense to not want to be #1 and it does mean something, it means the consensus says that team has the best collection of talent and it is a goal. UK is always a target so you might as well want the top spot.

Adolph Rupp wanted to win every game. That is real Kentucky basketball mentality.

Tubby loved to fly under the radar instead. That is Texas Tech basketball mentality.

You don't think that these kids feel pressure? You don't think last years team felt the pressure of going undefeated? You obviously have not heard Cal's comments on this. It's not just fans made up crap, the pressure does exist and while some teams are better equipped to handle it than others, a young team can be effected by that pressure.

"As much as that is possible with a UK team"

Just ready for the season to get rolling. I'm still in awe of the UL game I witnessed today.

being ranked #1 and going undefeated are two different things.

again...you are making stuff up to fit some fan narrative. they are players for uk, have dreams of being in the nba, their families lives are on the line...there is tons of pressure no matter what. you think these guys going into athens and say..."wow so much pressure right now. if only we were ranked 5th it would be way easier." come on.

this is mostly for fans to feel better about the season if we dont win it all. start the season #1 and dont win it....how do you feel about the season? i'll bet deep down...a lot of fans didnt enjoy last year. wont admit it though. just look at the weekly agony on this board with people complaining. but if you are ranked 15th...fans can justify losses for some reason.

How am I making stuff up? What have I made up? You are the one changing your tune. First, you said that there wasn't pressure facing these kids.
Actually, to quote you..." you have zero clue whether these kids feel pressure or not". Those were your words, now you are saying they face pressure from everywhere. So, if they do face pressures all around, why would this be any different? I'm not saying that it is overbearing pressure but I do think it adds some pressure to the team and puts expectations on them by fans. Just like you said in your post about fans being disappointed. Yeah, those are fan feelings but I believe that the team is effected by those feelings. They know that if they're preseason #1 that it adds pressure on them to perform like a #1 team. They know that fans are expecting them to play like the #1 team. Is that different if they're #2, #3, #4, or #5? Yeah, I think so but that's just my opinion. I just think there is a certain stigma that is placed on that preseason #1 team. So, since it means nothing in the overall picture of winning the title and since it can do more harm than good to my team, in my opinion, I would prefer to not have that added pressure to start. Ii won't be heartbroken if we are but I'd prefer not to do so. Whether you say that is fan made up or not, I think it's real. Thats just my opinion. I think I've been too much time on this already.

I will say this, its a good problem to have.

I can understand that thinking. We are the big dog on the block but even so, I think it's even more so with that #1 ranking. It comes with a certain prestige but that prestige comes with some added pressure. Last year, with so many guys returning from a FF season, we could handle it and with no problems. In 2014, it wasn't handled so well and the team spiraled until the end of the year.

Being number 1 in April is what is most important. I think we tend to forget that on here as we get caught up with pre-season rankings, regular season wins, and how many players we put in the NBA. This thing is about winning titles. Cal himself said "maybe I was put here to catch UCLA, I don't know, but we'll find out". And we will find out. Thats the expectation, to win titles. Cal himself is the one who set that expectation. Time to start turning these pre-season #1's and multiple first round draft picks into titles. Otherwise its all talk and bullshit. Lets win the damn title and shut everyone up. Im sick of reading threads about the successes of our NBA guys etc etc. Ready to start beating the Duke's of the world and doing our talking on the court.

Wherever we end up, it's gonna be a high ranking, and should reinforce what we already know - we're in it to win it all, and the expectations are about where they should be. I'm all in ( as usual) for another great ride !

I'd rather be ranked #1 to add to our wonderful statistics - another week to add on in the history of #1 rankings for this program.

Other than that, in reality of the current season, being ranked #1 doesn't really mean anything.

You truly understand nothing about Kentucky basketball. It's about wins, excellent individual players, Hall of fame coaches and on and on and on. Tournament championships are but one part of that legacy. It's the depth of accomplishments not some single stat. Else we'd be UCLA, a one trick pony. I really think you are an opposing team fan. However if you are a Kentucky fan, I understand why you are so fickle and shallow./
