He definitely excels in that department. That's one thing you can't criticize Cal for, he seems to always recruit good kids that we can be proud of.
Which is why I get so frustrated with him. Like you do SO many things well that the Coach of UK Basketball SHOULD do, get the on court (which in some ways is the easy stuff) right! This gets lost sometimes with our obsession with winning.
Sure Cal hasn't kept up the standard of UK basketball, we all agree there
He has done a phenomenal job getting us good people as players
We haven't had the embarrassing shit you see at ku and unc.....Cal is suspect as a bench coach. But he is a hell of judge of character it appears.
Credit where credit is due. Now win some fu××=ng games fatty!! Help these great kids get some bling in the form of a ring.
That's why I would love it if Cal retired from coaching and took on more of a GM role for UK basketball. He could still have a hand in what he's good at (promotion, innovation, consulting on players, etc.), but leave the day-to-day coaching up to someone else.Which is why I get so frustrated with him. Future governor?Travis Perry has got it going for him also. 4.0 grade point average. Active in his community with beautification projects. Coaches a little league baseball team. Active in future Business Leaders in the state. Really good kid
With the “lifetime contract” it seems that the position is there for him if he wants it. I agree with you though, I don’t see him really going for that. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure I want Cal around in that capacity either. I want the next coach to be able to come in and have full freedom to change the culture some and not have to run anything by Cal. I don’t see the benefit of Cal standing over the next guy. It’s Kentucky, we can get someone else here who can recruit and we’ll still have one of largest NIL funds. That's why I would love it if Cal retired from coaching and took on more of a GM role for UK basketball. Of course, that's a fantasy. In reality I don't think Cal's ego will allow that, and it would be hard to get a good coach that would be comfortable with Cal still hanging around the program.
Not only that, once the kids are here, he teaches them humility and charity. Whatever one might say about his X and O ability, Cal is genuine in that respect. He definitely excels in that department.
What are some of game coaching flaws that you witness?Cal does just about everything right except for the in game coaching lol. Which that’s kind of important

lol good one. I’m not a Cal hater like most on here. But he certainly hasn’t been as good as we expected in quite a while. Look at his record against top 25 teams over the past ohhhh 5 years or so.What are some of game coaching flaws that you witness?
Besides Cal being of high character and truly lives and teaches servant leadership and brings in players that represent themselves and the university well, he is one of the best coaches to ever coach college basketball.
His teams are disciplined, they always play hard.
His record bears that out. His record in close games in the tournament is superb.
But I’m willing to see the other side. Please be specific.
And in those details of where Cal’s coaching decisions were subpar please show what should have been done instead.
