USMNT/Soccer Thread

Yeah, once the casino was built at Broadway Commons but there was no reason not to keep the current HS stadium where it stands. The empty lot where they plan to move it is just a block away. It simply must be cheaper building the new stadium on public property even if it means tearing down a 14-year old stadium.

Or, you know, the MLS stadium that will hold over 20,000 people may need more space than a HS football stadium.

Wow, who would've ever thought USMNT would go in a at half up 1-0 against France!?

With that young of a team I'll take a 1-1 draw in Lyon against France's best team.

Since Nashville has a history of hosting good sized soccer events (Man U, Gold Cup), I wonder just how much of a leg up it gives them to be included in the final World Cup pool in 2026.

I expect Nashville to get a spot, but not Cincinnati. Nashville has hosted numerous USMNT events, while Cincinnati has the second smallest US stadium among the finalists and hasn't hosted the USMNT before.

Here's how I'd do the last part of knockout stage:
Final: NYC
Semis: Atlanta and Dallas
Quarters: LA, Chicago, Mexico City, Toronto, Boston, DC, Denver, Houston

showed up in my fb feed, gave me a decent chuckle.

but they played pretty well today in spurts I thought and I think they have a realistic chance of making some noise especially with Kane always capable and quick to get a poacher's goal

England wins that game 4 or 5 to 1 if they call any of the Spears Tunisia pulled out on Kane in the box on set pieces. One of the worst officiated games I've seen. Wasn't a penalty either that gave Tunisia their goal.

Tweeting out (and getting paid for it) support for Mexico in the World Cup. It would be like Anthony Davis tweeting out support for Louisville if UK didn’t make the NCAA tournament.

Ignorant take from LD. I will not cheer for Mexico if I live to be 234 years old. Mexico would not cheer for us if we were up against a team of Human eating aliens.

World Cup > Any other sports World Championship (FIBA, WBC, PGA, etc), I’m sure the majority would say better than the Olympics.

But is it really? I am a soccer fan from way back but as far as the competition it might actually be overrated. I would say its a 2 continent Cup only. Only South America and European teams have any chance of winning the World Cup. And out of those, usually only Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Spain, Italy, France and maybe England, Holland and Portugal. So less than 10 possibilities out of how many countries in the world?

Think about it. No team from North America, Central America, Australia, Asia, Middle East, or Africa have a chance unless just a fluke possible advancement to the final four.

It's a great show to most of the world, but most of the teams belonging to a lot of those people don't make it out of the group stage.

And that is the way it is World Cup after World Cup after World Cup after World Cup.

No doubt the WC teams' quality aren't as good as the top Champions League clubs because the players are spread out over 100+ countries not just 10-25 clubs. But, I find it more unpredictable; i.e., more balanced than the CL and it gets pretty competitive. And of course Euo & SA provide the winner over & over because that's where the most teams are located which is because that's where the overwhelming majority of the best players come from.

Argentina is finished and I've thoroughly enjoyed watching Croatia stomp their asses! Messi seems like a spoiled little punk with a shitty attitude when things don't go his way and the rest of his team are a bunch of whiny little bitches. They're the Duke Blue Devils of the international soccer world.

Not sure how they come out of that group now.

Messi seems so put out with his crew. It's depressing.

This has been an odd World Cup so far. Just seems disjointed - I couldn't tell you who should be the favorite right now.

Not an expert, but they looked like a team you'd not want to get behind. I'd like to see Nigeria score early then frustrate Argentina. But If I had to wager, Messi will snap out of a slump and Argentina will advance.
+1.

ARG has the athletes. Messi can change the world. Still pulling for NIG. ARG beat my Germans in the '86 WC title with Diego Maradona. I was vacationing down in France when that happened. Talk about WW2 carry-over. Wow!

People do take it seriously. My only World Cup story: I was in Bogota in 1994 when the US played Colombia. I was single then and was out to dinner with a Colombian-American woman at a sports bar she took me to. As the US starts to do well, I begin cheering a bit too loudly for the USA. Abruptly, she says, 'let's go' and we hustle out of the place, food half eaten. She claims the restaurant was owned by narco-traffickers and she overheard some of the young men muttering about how they were going to kill the gringo. I'm sure she was overreacting. But as you'll recall the poor Colombian whose own-goal cost them that very match was murdered as soon as the team returned home.
WOW!

Yes, I remember. I was also in Germany when that debacle occurred. Germans went home early, too. Nearly a national crisis.
