Underrated Actors

Mickey Rourke-greatest screen presence since Brando... too bad what happened but The Wrestler was brilliant

Emily Watson-see Breaking the Waves

John Cassavettes

Philip Seymour Hoffman

Daniel Day Lewis-celebrated talent within the actor community but more people in the US know more of Jim Carrey and Van Diesel output

Crispin Glover-great run during the 80s but deemed too eccentric

Tom Waits in some supporting roles

I’ve always felt like Jim Carrey doesn’t get enough credit for how good he is in dramatic roles. Seems like everyone just looks at him as a comedic actor, guys got some legit acting chops. I forgot the name of it but he was fantastic in that show he recently did on Showtime.

 Daniel Day-Lewis, Emily Watson, and Philip Seymour Hoffman are not "underrated" by any means.

Daniel Day-Lewis as an underrated actor? 😆 (I also lol'd at "Van Diesel")

I'll also nominate Meryl Streep for the most underrated actress. She clearly has never gotten the respect she deserves.

And no one ever talks about Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight but I thought he was just swell in that one. Really deserves a nice pat on the back for that performance.

Dwight .yoakum for sure. i think elvis presley was underated also. he just never got a dramatic role of substance. even glen campbell had his moments in true grit. i always thought he could’ve been good in more gritty westerns like lonesome dove.

I really don't mind gut-wrenching movies. I can watch Trainspotting and Requiem for a Dream over and over. Doesn't bother me.

That said, I've seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind exactly once. That movie just killed me.

Glenn Close.

I thought nothing could put me off sex or drinking. Then I saw her in Hillbilly Elegy.

I literally stopped drinking for fear I might pick her up in a bar and wake up beside her.

That's acting.

Mark Ruffalo. Most people just know him as the Hulk, but he was fantastic in the HBO miniseries last year where he plays twin brothers. I Know This Much is True is the name, and it's fantastic but super-depressing.

He was also great in Zodiac and Spotlight.

Kidding is the name of the show. You should check it out. Tremendous acting. Shamefully only lasted two seasons. Don’t know if Showtime has a free streaming trial but you could probably knock it just during the free trial if you aren’t super busy.

-David Morse
-Wendell Pierce

It's also fun Googling other people's lists and being like "Ooooh, I like then too". You just don't know these people's names till you bother to look them up or you randomly find out.

Brad Dourif
Richard Lynch
David Warner
John Vernon
Eva Green

Ok Gene Shalit, what is the criteria? In terms of really well-known actors known to the movie-going public and earning power says acting Giants as Adam Sandler and Shia LaBeouf earn 10-15 Times each one of those persons salary while each is infinitely more talented than the list below:

The Top Ten Money-Making Stars of 2008 (when the actors I listed were more in their prime)
  • Christian Bale.
  • Shia LaBeouf. ...
  • Harrison Ford. ...
  • Adam Sandler. ...
  • Reese Witherspoon. ...
  • George Clooney. ...
  • Angelina Jolie. ...
  • Daniel Craig. ...
I didn’t say they were unknown but rather they have many peers with incredibly inferior talent that make an amazing amount of money in comparison and are much more known. Adam Sandler is worth $420 million while Daniel Day Lewis is worth $60 million.

Sharon Stone. She's known as a bimbo most memorable for a slow leg uncross. But she can actually act, given some decent direction, as in Casino and also in...okay. Casino was it. But just because she was always in terrible movies, that shouldn't be held against her.

Bob Odenkirk

He's outstanding in Better Call Saul.

Fun fact: Odenkirk was slated to be Michael Scott in The Office when their first pick (Carell) couldn't do it. Once Carell's schedule freed up, he was back in and Odenkirk was out. I actually think he could have pulled it off, and he even played a bizzaro-world version of Michael as Pam's boss in an episode.
