It seems that he mistakes on-ball defense for off-ball defense. I think Cal needs to tell the team "hey, we've got 3 7 footers, worry about your own guy and we'll take giving up two's over giving up 3's".

Reed doesn't lack the ability to guard the ball, he just gambles so much he both: ends up out of position a lot, and gets a lot of steals, blocks and disruptions instead.

He just needs to learn when to gamble and when to lock in on his guy.

Reed issue is he loves to ball watch and floats to the paint leaving his man wide open. I actually think his on ball D is decent…better than the other guards.
