I don’t buy this at all. It’s true that the Bob Knight drill sergeant approach to coaching where coaches get a pass for just yelling profanities in players’ faces non-stop is falling out of favor, and that’s honestly not a bad thing in my opinion. Some of the things that are rumored to be happening here with players and their “handlers” allegedly dictating what position they’ll play, who else can be recruited for the team, and in one high profile case whether they even bother playing at all before entering the draft are absolutely not going on at every program, much less to the extent they do here. Cal taking his “players first” mantra too far almost certainly played a role in creating that problem.
We're potentially going to be in position where we have to take guys much worse than wheeler. I reference wheeler because he was a nice player for most programs but never going to be the guy for us. Had we not been desperate, we wouldve never taken him imo
And he doesn't want anyone who could challenge the 5 for starting position or minutes. JMO

How many times have we had the #1 recruiting class but went nowhere, mainly due to bad roster structure. Expect the same.

I can’t remember if the 2013 team had the #1 or #2 recruiting class, but it was one of the two.
2013 had its best player go down. Probably nothing more than a sweet 16 team at best anyways but you don't lose all the starters from the national title team and business as usual.
That season was a free pass season if ever ... after winning the title and losing everyone, I think even UK fans understood ... it was just the NIT reality that really hurt. Had UK made the tourney as a 8/9/10 seed and lost early, it's just a footnote.
And yes, it was the #1 class (some suggested UCLA was #1 because they had the #1 and #3 overall players in Muhammad and Kyle Anderson) but it was a very weak recruiting class. Shabazz Muhammad was the #1 player, followed by Noel. Recall it was the Anthony Bennett year. UK's class had Noel (2), Poythress (8), Goodwin (14), and WCS (40). As we all know, Poythress was not really a top 10 talent ... good college player, not elite, not capable of leading a team as a freshman the way many other top 10 Cal recruits were.

I still maintain UK earned the first 4 appearance. Ncaa went with the mid majors instead though. It would have been a bad loss without noel though
Honestly 2017. We had some good teams 2018-2020, but all of them had periods of struggle and all lost to at least 1 terrible team they shouldn’t have.
