Top RB priority to Kentucky...

Well, in a run first offense, you need more than four scholarship RB’s. And Mizell is coming off a major injury so no guarantee that he’ll be effective. We had to get another RB.
And there was always the idea of having another RB cause we had a good one in the signing class from Ohio until he decommitted to MiZZU at the last second

Staff wasn't satisfied with Wilcox and Patterson and Dowdell?
Is he expected to just add depth or compete for RB1 in fall camp?

It's not that at all. It was about going into a new SEC season with four runnung backs, one of whom had never taken a snap above the high school level and is recovering from a major leg injury. They wanted another option in the room who could hit the gaps hard and break tackles. They took McGowan who will be there for just one year, maybe not long enough to scare off anyone else.

Sounds like the players in the locker room better lock their lockers. Honestly, it sounds like he made a poor decision and has learned from it. Also, he will have some money, so he won't need to steal to get nice items.

Kind of 'slithery'...makes people miss...decent speed but not Boom Williams type
Just looking at the highlight film....Yes. He is shifty/slithery, but only for a split second, and then he turns it north-south and gains positive yards.
  • He does not run scared.
Skill wise good to go. Character-wise, let's hope he learned a lesson and grew from his incident at OU.

Interesting journey:
  • He played well in a crowded backfield for the Sooners in 2020 (Big 12) before he was booted.
  • He had to sit out some time away from football.
  • He reentered CFB at the community college level in 2023 (a humbling experience I would guess going from OU to Butler CC in Kansas).
  • From CC, he moved up to a solid CUSA squad at NM State and turned heads.
  • And now he is back in the P4 SEC no less.
IF he did some growing during this process, we just might have a solid SEC RB that understands the value of his opportunity at UK.

I'll be cheering for him to complete the "fall from grace - to - return to glory" story wearing Kentucky blue.

Welcome aboard Seth McGowan!

I expect him to be the starter. Dowell short yardage then a change of pace runner the pick between the two sophomores. Mizzell will probably be gone after the season.

Navy Cat, I believe the right term for McGowan running style is "one cut runner". He hits the gap, gets into the second level, cuts back against the grain of the pursuit, and accelerates. It's basically the same running style Benny Snell used although they are different players.

Although it seems to have stuck in the media, characterizing Dante Dowdell as a short yardage back is misleading. Yes, he is effective in short yardage situations, like almost any good RB is. But he brings much more than that and, having watched his film, I think he has a little more quickness than Snell had. He isn't a speedster by any means, but he can accelerate at the second level and make a LB miss.

The running styles of McGowan, Dowdell, Patterson, and Wilcox are different. Hopefully, complimentary. Stylewise, Dowdell is closer to Snell. I am not comparing them as players, just describing styles. McGowan is closer to CRod. By comparison, Patterson and Wilcox are quicker and more dangerous in space.

Then it seems changing them every couple of plays vs. keeping one for a series would keep D's more off-balance. JMO.

The balance in the room should be good. My only fear is that one of the young guys get impatient and decides to chase a starter role elsewhere. One more year getting stronger and learning their roles, Patterson, Wilcox, and hopefully Mizell, will be ready to form a great RB room. Not nearly as critical with the portal the way it is but as an old school fan, I would like to see those guys develop here.

I don't think we will lose one of them. But it can happen when you least expect. That's the times.
