I don't think that it is a coincidence that we have not played as well since the semester ended. During school the team can only practice 20 hrs/wk and they look fresh. But during the holidays and sessions of "Camp Cal" we look a step slow. No further evidence than the A&M game where we were constantly beat to 50-50 loose balls. Luckily the remedy comes Wednesday with the start of the Spring Semester.

I agree. Mentally and physically. The Bahamas trip was great but it also likely sped up the wall that college teams generally hit.

But this is about the time you see weirdness. John Wall's "I'm not having fun." Terrence Jones mental breaks. WCS's stuff last year. It all happened about this time.

We're in the dog days of the season. The good news is that all good teams get a second wind at some point. You just hope that they can keep winning and somehow work through it.

I almost feel like Cal pulled the reigns back in a bit after UL game and had these guys working on other things that we haven't been doing well and it's just taking some time to get all of that working together with everything else.

Also a bit of an indictment on how important Poy was to this team. Would have been huge help in last two games. We're still learning to replace those intangibles he gave us.

Fine with where we are at, we need games like this to strengthen us mentally for what's to come. Haven't lost any faith in this team.

How can you be tired at 19 years old...........when all you have to do is play ball

Then Cal needs to go back to the platoon system, it was working and since it stopped using it this team does not look the same, I will give Ole Miss some props they played a hell of a game, but Texas A&M did not shoot the lights out, their FT % was horrible, UK just did not match their intensity and it showed this team can be beat by beating themselves.

Well, there's "playing ball" and then there's this.

I play ball at the park. These guys are doing something different. It isn't just the games--it's a lot of corollary stuff. Millions of dollars are stake. Reputations are on the line. Plus you have the monumental weight that Kentucky fans put on this.

I'm sure it's taxing. But the best teams UK has had have worked through those same pressures. There usually does come a time when the team scuffles, and normally it's in the middle of January or early February.

Maybe mentally...no way they are physically.

I think they had the long break, got distracted with "clutter", and need to get their heads back in the right place.

These guys are teenages for the most part. Only a matter of time before you start believing how great you are when you hear it everyday. They have mentally relaxed thinking things were gonna be easy in conference. Time to refocus.

JMO...

Whats our record again? Can we stop with the excuses at least until we lose one ?(which by the way I don't think happens this season)...

What's all about Poy?

One player--a role player at that--has made this team look lethargic in multiple facets of the game?

I just have a hard time buying that.

So these team that they have been playing are not tired also, and Ky is playing with a lot more talent and more players..

Tired? BS

Cal platooned these guys for the 1st 12 games and nobody got a tremendous amount of minutes.

Virginia looks pretty good and they play 7-8 guys. UL gets up and down.

Lack of focus... Yep
Confused on offense... Yep
Lack of intensity... Yep
Tired..., not buying it

I'm not buying the bull you're selling. I've said it over and over again but this team plays to it's competition. This was the same excuse used when they went though that stretch in early December when UK wasn't coming out as fresh against the Cupcakes. In between the Kansas and unc game Kentucky played pretty uninspired ball against the Columbia's and the EKU's and still ending up winning big and by double digits.

They have heard for months how great they are. They have heard how bad the SEC is. How no one is really going to challenge them. They are playing the same uninspired ball except these SEC teams are just a little better than the cupcakes they faced in early December so playing hard for 10 minutes isn't going to blow these teams out. They won't go away when you run up a 10 zip lead or go up by 6 with 8 minutes to go. I hope the last two games have taught them something but this team plays when the big lights come on so that's encouraging come March.

Fatigue might be an issue. Sleeping twitter pics seem to be trending up. Read one (no pic) that said Cal was in Paducah napping at certain moments.

I have a hard time taking seriously any fan that thinks Poy was a lethargic role player in multiple facets of any game. He may not have been instrumental in some games but his presence opened up the middle for the other players YOU noticed.

tired of carrying the heads around im sure they swelled a bit when they went home for the holidays.

This!!!

Our team is just not playing with attention to detail. You would think after all of the hype and experience(for a Cal team at UK), our guys would have a fire to do something that hasn't been completed in close to 40 years. Our lack of intensity in games against lesser opponents is becoming a definite problem.

I KNOW that Cal will get the very best out of this team come March. However, it may take a loss or 2 before he gets their attention.

You misread my post. I didn't say Poythress was lethargic; I was talking about the team.

I like Poythress a lot. If we would've gotten the Poythress that we saw in the Bahamas then the injury would have been a crushing blow. But judging by the first few games, Poythress was being outrebounded by a large margin by Lyles, he hadn't shot the ball well, and he looked to be just playing a niche--which is fine, and necessary, but I don't think he's the reason we've hit this wall.

Just wow. It amazes me reading posts that know exactly why a team is not performing to expectations and they say it with such conviction that it comes off as an exact truth that they know. Sorry (and forgive me if you're a UK coach.) but you know nothing more than the others "bull" you said you were not buying. I guess you're selling a different brand of bull?

Note: I am not attacking you posting but unless you are a coach of this team I have to say you are selling bull too.

That's okay, I am reading it.

Searching for answers for the poor performance observed the last two games.

I have wondered as well if there were not some tired legs. Dakari has been showing poor elevation with his attempts at the basket. But, again we all are wondering as it seemed we had this invincible team that was over powering high level opponents and seemingly are getting over powered by marginal ones.

They struggled for one game (won) in conference away from home and something is wrong? I don't feel anything is wrong.

Yes, they did.

A lot of teams get sluggish after the holidays. Just ask Duke and Arizona fans. Alabama on the other hand is looking quite sharp. Curious to see how we respond down there after two close calls.

I feel like we play like we are playing against ourselves a lot.

Some of those fancy moves, or way we drive with indecisiveness, seems like we have WCS/LEE/KAT all waiting to block our shots or something.

That may be closer to the thruth than some think. This team's hardest games are against themselves. They stay ramped up due to playing against a top team day in and day out. They could be on another plane... (It could happen..)

Isn't UK team one of the youngest in CBB this year even though we have the returning guys?

latest available info UK 6th after Binghamton, Central Arkansas, USC, Vanderbilt, Niagara

Normal young men that age deal with this stuff

I've had this same thought. When they drive they seem to anticipate a lot of things--Andrew in particular--that never come.

The same thought had occurred to me with regard to our bigs having trouble finishing around the rim and our guards having trouble finishing off drives. Could it be that some bad habits and/or loss of confidence has developed from going against ourselves in practice everyday as we are so difficult to score against inside?

I know foul calls inside were very hard to come by on Saturday, but it still seems like we're a little tentative around the basket. Loved Booker's finish with the left hand right through hard contact directly to his face, but we need everyone to toughen up and finish stonger.

I agree with Bob.

Tired has nothing to do with the trouble. These guys shouldn't be tired in the least. Not a single player is averaging more than 26 minutes per game. They may have gotten out of their normal routine during the holidays, but it's not fatigue.

I will say this, though- in nearly every noon or early start we've had this season, the team has looked sluggish coming out of the gate. I don't think that is about the team being "tired" or run down though. I think that has to do with the guys being typical college guys. They would rather play at midnight than noon.

Regardless, I think it's all about the lack of focus Bob mentioned here. They haven't come out with energy in some games. They have lost focus in the middle of games at times as well. In this TX A&M game Saturday, they came out flat from the start. They finally started giving high effort toward the end of the first half and then they started the second half well. The defensive effort was high. And UK took over the game midway through the second half. But at that point, I could see it, they relaxed again, thinking they have the game in hand. And that's when A&M began grabbing the 50/50 balls once again. We also had several calls go against us in the last 2 segments of the game and players fouling out and the blown lay-up at the end of the game that allowed A&M to send it to OT. The first OT we seemed to be in shock. The second OT we took control.

This team will be fine, of course. We could be 0-2 in the SEC but we're 2-0. Our guys have surely learned a lesson at this point that they can't come out flat but they have to match the effort of the opponent, regardless of their ability (or lack thereof) The defensive intensity MUST be high every game if we're to have any breathing room. And they've managed to learn these lessons without losing. They dug themselves a hole on an opponent's home court (down 11 with 5 mins remaining in the first half) and still managed to win the game. There is something to be said for that as well.
