This is why players stay in the draft despite knowing they won’t go first round

Interesting numbers. I get tired of seeing people say "next year PJ would be guaranteed..." are you guaranteeing that? Is the NBA? No. No.

With that said, next year is probably a weaker draft, which should help him. But that's the only reason - smaller talent pool. Not coming back for a year.

A lot depends on where a player goes. Kyle Macy, who was as slow footed as possible, was on the Phoenix roster a couple years. Then he got traded to Chicago and was behind some guy named Jordan....and soon gone.

And he could hit FTs, PJ.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Its never been a question of if our guys will paid. It's how much. Going in the first round is better than taking a chance in the 2nd round and beyond.

Coming back always seems like the best option if there is a good chance of getting in the first round. But some like at a player like Draymond agree. Who went second round and ended up getting a huge contract sooner than a first round pick because he wasn’t locked into the four year contract that first rounders are locked into.

The thing people for get is that these players are very confident, which is a big reason they are as good as they are. That confidence allows them to think they will put play their 2nd round draft position and get that major contract. It’s easy to sit from the side line as fans and say “so and so should come back” since 99.9% of fans never were good enough to make it professionally so they knew their dream of making it pro was always nothing more than a dream

It’s different for players who have real pro potential and feel they are good enough to play in the pros. Fans should put themselves in their shoes by thinking if some company in their field were selecting employees to work for he company and you had a chance to be selected, you wouldn’t have the millions and four year security of a first round pick but you knew you had a shot to get to the second round and with your confidence in your work skill you felt you could make even more than a first rounder after you show the company how skilled you are in that first year.

Now many will lie and say they would say at their job and wait until next year where they have a good chance of going first, but that’s never a guarantee but deep down almost everyone would jump at that chance to go second because of the fair you have in your skills at your job (unless you know you aren’t that skilled and you are just barely hanging on to your job)

That same confidence has seen a large percentage of second rounders go broke as well. I'd like to see some data on second round guarantee contracts and how long they played and their current living situation.

Great post. The only thing I'd change is that most cant put themselves in their shoes because most people can't dream that big.

Why would you use Draymond Green as an example when the guy stayed 4 years at Michigan State as a reason a guy should leave and how great an option the 2nd Round can be? It can be argued he got those guarantees because he stayed 4 years and was ready to play/help contribute.

Don't care what a kid does as long as they are prepared and understand what it'll take. If they want out, let them go. People who don't want to be part of something don't help if they aren't invested and you shouldn't want them back. Biggest issue I have, is if you want to enter the NBA or Pro basketball, then you need to prepare like it and work. Inspirational quotes, laughable videos trying to convey you "putting in work" are not going to mean a damn thing. In Washington's case, there is more effort taking place from the people rebounding and passing then what he's doing.

Feel slighted or "hurt" by comments. Then fix it. It's the real world. These guys get all upset and angry that not everyone agrees with them. Get used to it and guess what, in the professional world, nobody cares unless you can provide them a player who can help them draw people and win games. If you can't, sorry it didn't work out and good luck with life. They control the outcome but so many want it taken care for them. Can't have it both ways.

Yep, and I've seen other studies that show that, even among the few second rounders that don't get guaranteed deals their first year, the vast majority do eventually within only a year or two thereafter. And even the scant few leftovers get quite lucrative overseas offers.

Unfortunately for the "stay in school" minded UK fans, the factual support for that position gets weaker every year. I remember, once upon a time, when we used to say "if you're not a lottery pick" you should come back. But then we were forced to admit that it was really "If you're not a first round pick." But now even THAT'S grown increasingly obsolete, since even second rounders nowadays generally end up pretty damn happy they left.

Take a look at the thread I posted in the link above. Late second rounders really aren’t doing all that well, if their goal is a career in the NBA.

I didn’t analyze who went to Europe or stayed there.

I would like to see the percentages on the number of those players that sign a second contract

Do some people not realize that they base their personal opinions on the money rather than the career? (which in turn would bring even more money?)

It all depends on the player and what he needs. Some need to go, some can't handle it when they are there that young and flame out.

Ridiculous how money has become the only driving force for goals in people's lives. It's sad really, because when they get some they realize it's not solving any problems.

Yes I realize Eric Bledsoe was a box car child. This rule isn't universal.

Draymond could actually shoot decent in college as well. He is a jack of all trades who actually developed each skill to the NBA level.

PJ is not getting drafted in the second round.
He is headed straight to the G league if he leaves this year. He had a decent first year as a college freshman and I think he will be a really good college player by his junior season. He needs to play at least two more years before even considering the NBA.

We should have a good feeling on what PJ and JV will be doing after the NBA Draft Combine which will be completed on Sunday, May 20th. We should know then a week from Sunday if PJ, JV, and WG will be returning to UK or staying in the Draft. It would seem that Coach Cal has a good feeling on these 3 players or he would have been out recruiting big men instead of all the guards he has coming in 2018 and 2019. You would also think that Coach Cal would be going ahead and bringing in a Reid Travis and not waiting if he thought he was losing all 3 this year. It feels like Coach Cal knows something or believes 2 out of 3 or all 3 are returning to Kentucky next season. Lets hope at least 2 out of the 3 players do return for next year.

I'm just here to say ppl settling for 2nd round contracts when they can get 1st rounders the next year are bums. Also a lot more players in the world that go overseas than see a bigtime NBA contract

definitely makes the first 10 spots of the 2nd round appear more validating. Still, author is taking some liberties with use of word "guaranteed". Either way, point taken and well made.

Also doesn't specify the money difference between a 1st round "guaranteed" deal and a 31-45 picks' "guaranteed" deal.
