Rick Pitino

Assisted under Boeheim and Hubie Brown
Strong tourney run at a mid major

Billy Donovan
First head job in late 20’s
Assisted under Pitino
Made a final four fairly early in his career.(he was only 35 at that time)

Dan Hurley
First head job in his late 20’s (high school)
Assisted under a legend (His dad)

What’s the common themes?

I ask because I’m wondering if our best option is to try and find the guy before he’s actually the guy.

I will say, Shaka Smart has the pedigree. I don’t know why he struggled so bad at Texas though. And it’s never a guarantee. But he started young. 31 when he took the vcu job. Was an assistant under another great coach, Donovan at Florida. And made a final four at a mid major early in his career.

And no i’m not advocating for Shaka. But Jay Wright didn’t exactly set the world on fire at Nova at first either. Neither did Hurley at Uconn.
