LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky men’s basketball head coach John Calipari and football head coach Mark Stoops have each agreed to two-year extensions to their respective contracts, Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart announced on Wednesday.

The buy out looks like a step backward. He only has a 1 million dollar buy out to leave. That's pocket change for most schools that might come after him. On the other hand we just tacked on 2 more years at 4+ million per that we have to pay if we have to terminate him. And again this was not the time for this. 6 months ago his job was hanging by a thread. Stoops has clearly bought himself some space but he needs more than 1 season to justify another extension. And again nobody is coming after him so why do it.
I see the point of those questioning the decision, but after watching 35+ years of mostly bad football with an occasional good year once a decade, I'm willing to go all in on Stoops. The probability of getting a replacement that would recruit at an SEC level as he has, is remote, and coaching has improved each year.
Agree with those that say this is too soon. I like the direction we're going, but one great win at UL does not warrant a 2 year extension.
Exactly. The timing of this is stupid. No one is after Mark Stoops, but we just made him the 7th or 8th highest paid coach in America the last 2 years of this contract. We also increased a buyout that everyone on this board thought was ridiculous last year. Extend Calipari every year, he is doing a fantastic job and any of my complaints are very minor in the grand scheme of things, but I would have liked to see a much better defense last year and I kind of feel like a lot of what we accomplished was against the very worst SEC East we have ever seen and will ever see again. This definitely falls under the "I hope I am wrong and he shows me more" category, but even if he does there was no need to give him an extension.
You can still be all in without extending him right now. He still had 3 full seasons left on his contract. If he continues down the road he is on, this yes, next summer I would agree 100%, but it's too soon.
I see your point, but I feel just fine investing in a wider mote. The cash we are raking in now make the coaching salary not that big of an issue comparatively speaking. I look at it as an investment in the future of the program.
But right now he can't tell the current guys he is recruiting that he will be here to see them graduate (and some troll will use that fact against him on the recruiting trail).

Completely agree. Taking a team from 2-10 to 7-5 with the added benefit of great recruiting is absolutely no grounds to extend a coach at a perennial loser. For shame, Mitch. The hell is that man thinking?

I go along with the too soon crowd. We just had a decent season, 1 game over .500 with a bowl game trip where we got beat badly. That's an OK season for UK but hardly warrants a 2 year extension when we already have him under contract for several years. Barnhart just jumps too soon at extensions for Stoops, I think. I know there is currently a good deal of excitement around the program but waiting another season to see how things go would have been the way to proceed.
Funny. The ones on here complaining about the extension are the very ones that would be complaining loudest because Barnhart didn't "lock him up" if Stoops were to leave.
If he goes 3-9 the next two seasons, how do you get rid of him? He has had one decent year since he has been here and you are going to lock up all that money in him?
We didn't lock him up, that's the thing. We put a lousy $1 million buyout in his contract. That is going to stop no school from comIng after him. What we did is commit more money and make the buyout on our end more. I think Stoops is the guy, I have been one of the few Mitch supporters on here, but this one makes no sense to me.
A buyout isn't going to lock him up. Showing goodwill toward him at this point will do more than any large buyout will toward keeping him at UK.
I wish Barney would have waited another year.....I'm expecting a special season next year. But, what if we only win 4 or 5 gsmes? Stoops hasn't proven enough to get extension after extension. We're in no danger of losing him right now.
He can't really tell them that anyway, only 2 or 3 coaches can. And it's not the extension that I am concerned about or the pay increase it's locking us in to an unknown while Stoops is not really locked in at all.
If Michigan or Ohio State or another big school suddenly needs a coach and comes calling, Stoops is gone. That million dollar buyout will barely cover the cost of the private jet they will send for him. We were into Stoops for $20 million. Now if Mark Stoops had to pay $20 million to leave early you can at least justify the extension. But at a 20 to 1 ratio we are still taking all the risk here with no security that he will be around if he is successful.
Now the flip side of the coin. What if we go 2 and 10 next year? Then what? We now can't do anything about it for 5 years. If this gamble goes bad UK football will never recover. That to me is an irrational gamble that Barny has now tripled down on.
If you want to increase Stoops' pay then go ahead. But there is no reason to lengthen our financial risk and increase the buyout on our end. We shouldn't be talking about that until he puts together at least 1 and preferably 2 more winning season.

Our athletics director has done some good things and has a lot of good qualities, but being an astute businessman is not one of them. No professional advisor would recommend that UKAA enter into this contract at this point. To say this is one sided and unnecessary is an understatement.
People talk about buyouts because the more years you add to a contract the bigger the buyout is, and if a guy doesn't succeed, then it can be a deterrent to moving on from that coach. Everything we discuss on here in relation to the program is out of our control...no one is stressed about it, just sharing our take on it.
I am a Stoops supporter, I am a Mitch supporter, but this is jumping the gun imo. No kid is going to balk at going to a school when the current coach is under contract for 3 years. Getting into a 5 year contract with a coach that just came off his first winning season in his 4th year at 7-6 is something I don't agree with.
The commitment to Stoops sends a message to recruits (as has been stated). If Stoops goes 3-9 the next few seasons, we'll be stuck with an underachieving coach. However, the potential improvement at DC and great recruiting classes make that 3-9 mark unlikely. I'll be happy to eat crow if Stoops is a bust from here on out, but we were so close to bowling in Stoops' third year. Think about that. We've had good seasons that in most other conferences, would've yielded a bowl. This past season, we broke through.
HCMS got rid of the genius Dawson and brought in Gran. Eliot "left" and was replaced with someone Stoops brought onto staff with plenty of DC experience (calculated replacement a la Sarkesian/Saban). I consider both replacements to be upgrades with one already being a proven upgrade.
Plus, our talent is gaining experience and is still coming in. We went bowling last season with the freaking reserve QB for goodness sakes (granted, he's a damn good "reserve").
Stoops is a good coach, but I'd agree with your opinion if we had gone 5-7 again while retaining Eliot. However, we didn't, and I'm confident in Stoops' ability to continue this process. We lose Boom, Badet, Timmons, Toth, McWilson, McClain, and three linebackers plus more. Losing Boom, Badet, and Toth alone would freak out most fans given any other circumstances. However, we (at least, I) don't see that happening. Why is that?
I like the decision, and I'll support supporting the first coach in eons to take us bowling with a good foundation for the future any day.
If we decline the next couple years this will come back to bite us in the butt. A failure by Stoops should fall straight on Barnhart and if we are forced to fire him then Barnhart needs to go with him. I've never been a fan of most of Barnhart's extensions. As someone else said, make sure he at least repeats his success before extending him.
As usual the biggest problem with this thread is defining success as 7 wins. If fans would be honest Stoops winning 10 games combined in year 2 and 3 was a damn miracle. This roster was the worst in p5 football. If fans would come to terms with how awful the situation for Stoops was then Stoops has had 3 very good seasons.
One thing Mitch has done is make Kentucky possibly the most attractive head coaching position in the country. Any potential replacement can look at the various extensions given to Stoops and realize that with even modest success, our AD will shovel money at him faster than his great grandchildren will ever spend it. Yes I do. I was sold when Stoops won 5 games his 2nd year with the band of misfit toys. Nothing against those guys but most of that roster had no business playing division 1 football. We went 4 4 in conference with a 160 pound back up qb and a defense with all soph. Stoops has worked miracles from what Joker did. We had like 30 guys leave under Stoops and 1 guy went division 1. AJ Legree thats it.
Whether we like it or not we better hope he is successful. He is back up to 5 years with only one pretty good year to show for it following 2 years of late season collapses. Mitch isn't going to buy out a 4 year contract regardless of the results after this coming season. So we are stuck with Stoops for good or for bad the next 2 to 3 years unless things get to the point of a major fan exodus again. Way to go Mitch.

In answer to the "what ifs" I have read above, it's a calculated risk, like other calculated risks. You have the ball on the 2 yard line 3 points behind with 30 seconds left in the game. You can go for the touchdown, but "what if" you don't get it? - well you lose, but if you make it you win. Or you can go for the field goal (status quo) and may still wind up losing.

This miracle talk is ridiculous. First off it was bad but not even as close to being as bad as some are trying to exaggerate it to be. This is like Matt Jones constantly stating that UK was a mid level MAC team when Joker left. Never mind the fact that during Joker's last year Kent State went undefeated in the MAC and we blew them out. We were not a quality SEC team for sure but we were hardly a mid level MAC team either.
Second I don't buy the previous argument that we were the worst roster in P5 conferences. There were a lot of truely awful rosters back then. I haven't done a survey of that year but I'd bet there's probably a dozen or so teams we would have beaten. Again not saying Joker left the program in good shape, it's just some of this miracle talk is hyperbole.
Also let's not pretend that he was routinely beating P5 teams those first 3 years either. Other than an occasional win over Vandy or South Carolina, Stoops' wins were against barely division 1 teams. It doesn't take a miracle to beat Charlotte, Louisiana Monroe or South Alabama. Even with the roster Joker left behind. Stoops had a couple of nice wins those first 3 years but pretty much every coach pulls a few of those off. After all Joker beat Tennessee with the roster he left behind. And he didn't even have a QB play in the game. Bottom line is these miracle wins are not even close to being as miraculous as you make them sound.
