interesting stats to me are
319 games played and 124 games started between the returners and transfers and im sure Johnson, Moreno and Jelavic played in and started a ton of games in HS and Euro.
all 13 players played double didgit minutes per game last year
8 of our 10 core players shot over 42% on field goal attempts and Moreno shot 72%
8 out of 10 core players avg 6 points or more a game with Oweh and Lowe leading their teams in scoring
8 out of 10 core players shot over 30% from 3 last year and im sure Jasper did also
9 of 13 players shot over 75% from the ft line

I like the experience.

I like having eight guys who have played at least one season in a P5 conference.

I like having six guys who have played in the Sweet Sixteen, two that have played in the Final Four, and one that has won a title.

Starters to begin the season:

G Lowe(ACC)
G Oweh(SEC/Big 12)
G Aberdeen(SEC)
F Dioubate(SEC)
F Garrsion(SEC/Big 12)

Quaintance(Big 12), Chandler(SEC), and Noah(SEC) have also been through the big conference grind and know what to expect.

And the young guys have a lot of potential.

Johnson could emerge as a star, but he doesn’t really have to.

Jelavic is a bit of a mystery, he could really help us this season, but doesn’t have to be a star.

Williams has a lot of potential as well.

Moreno would probably start on a lot of teams, and he’s likely our 11th or 12th man.

I am really impressed by Pope’s ability to construct a roster. A lot of thought has been put into it, you can tell.

I believe Williams will be a starter and one of our best players.
I’m taking a wait and see approach with Williams. He looks the part, but he played in the AAC, which is a far cry from SEC basketball.

I’m starting Lowe (All-ACC, Pitt’s leading scorer last year), Oweh (All-SEC, UK’s leading scorer last year), and Aberdeen (SEC player, won the national title last year) in the backcourt.

If Williams starts, he definitely earned it.

Jaland Lowe shoots 89% from the FT line, but only 27% from 3. Sounds like his shot isn't completely broken.

Played with a broken finger on his shooting hand COULD be part of it. That and he had the ball a LOT on a terrible Pitt team. Better system, better players around him, look for him to have better shooting %s. He is really good.

Jayden Quantince 6-9 230 SO F/C (Arizona State) 9.4ppg 7.9rpg 1.5apg 1.1spg 2.6bpg 24gp/24gs 29.7mpg 53%fg 19%3p 48%ft

Mouhamed Diaboute 6-7 215 JR F (Alabama) 7.2ppg 5.9rpg 1.1apg 0.9spg 0.7bpg 37gp/0gs 16.0mpg 62%fg 46%3p 61%ft

I assume we rely heavily on these three guys and that they will all get a lot of minutes.... and all three can't buy a free throw to save their lives. Hopefully they live in the gym and work on this part of their game. We've got depth but I can see some tight games where it's tough to leave these important pieces on the floor at crunch times. Some downright ugly FT numbers there.

How many guys do you see in double figures this year? Anyone gonna be 20+ average? Bet we have several averaging 12 or so points.

I think Oweh will lead us in scoring but Lowe won’t be far behind. I think our 3rd scoring option becomes Aberdeen. All 3 will avg between 13-14 ppg. Lead by Jasper a bunch of players will avg between 7-10 ppg. If Jayden comes in from day 1 and gives us 8 plus rebounds and 3 blocks a game we’re going to be a tough win for anybody. Kam and Mo will probably not have eye popping stats but will do the dirty work to make us a great team. I’m hoping Jelavic will be as good as advertised. Chandler, Noah, Garrison, Moreno and Potter come play their role off the bench and not try to do it all.

If JQ can have respectable shooting numbers he will be a monster but he has to get. 19% from 3 and especially that 46% FT number way up. Just shoot 30/70 and he will be a monster if healthy.

I think Chandler will be a Super Sixth type man. I could see him scoring 10 a game next season. Or close to it, Maybe a little more Aberdeen type stats in a few more minutes a game. It looked like the speed of the college game slowed down the last month of the season for him.

Jaland Lowe shoots 89% from the FT line, but only 27% from 3. Sounds like his shot isn't completely broken.

The reason Pope didn’t care about that is because he’s naturally a good 3 point shooter. He had a hurt hand and was on a team that asked him to chuck shots. He won’t shoot as many and with the rest of his game the way it is, Pope knows he’s probably good for 36% or better this season. Shooting will not be an issue for him.

He’s gonna be loved here.

I think JQ will be in the 10-12 points / 8/10 rebound per game numbers. Amari is / was not near as skilled offensively as JQ and he was near double / double. JQ has a lot better touch around the rim and out to 15 feet than Amari. I think Cam will score than what people are expecting. He can stroke it, he will play substantial minutes and score double figures. I would say several (8/9 players) will be bunched in the 8-14 ppg range.

I understand things are different when you change teams but this doesn’t scream fantastic offensive players. Yes I know it’s a different system and such and a different coach. There will also be some of these guys playing less minutes than before and some more.

They’ll likely be a little more efficient. The way Pope runs an offense, it’s usually pretty efficient.

And I think we will be better defensively this season.

The defense is better without doubt and also rebounding but I do think the offense will take a hit from last season.

Agreed.

But I think Lowe in particular will be much more efficient in Pope’s offense than he was for Pitt. He won’t have to be the guy that carries the load. When you look at his play on last year’s Pitt team, he had to do a lot. Adding his points and assists together, he accounted for about 37% of their scoring. That’s a lot from one guy. He won’t be expected to do as much on a team with so many other weapons.

I am anxious to see Lowe perform in a more efficient offense surrounded by equally talented players. I just don’t see him chucking shots with the likes of Oweh, Aberdeen, Quaintance, and Garrison on the floor with him. He averaged 5.5 assists per game on a relent deficient team, so his decision making must be elite level. Should be even better surrounded by elite talent. Quaintance should feast at the rim with Lowe demanding attention. A guy like Dioubate, who looks to me like an elite finisher, should thrive playing with a guy like Lowe. Then looking at a 3 and D guy like Williams. He should get some wide open looks off Lowe’s penetration.

I think our offense is leaps and bounds ahead of last year. Aberdeen, Lowe, Otega, Dioubate can all get to the rim when the offense breaks down. Otega and Lamont was the only guys last year that could do that. If anyone else got ran off the 3 point line we went to an Amari or Carr post up (mostly Amari) and that was kind of hard to watch. As great of a passer as he was, it looked like he never practiced a shot in his life.

I bet this team averages more ppg than last years. They're just going to get those points in a different way. A lot will come from offensive rebounds and cuts to the basket.

This team also has more guys that can create off the bounce and score through contact.

I still think Pope runs the same 5 out offense and I still think Kam, Aberdeen, Oweh, Chandler and Lowe, will be good enough shooters to keep the defense spread out to the 3 point line.

Johnson and Jelevic are intriguing to me, I have a feeling at the very least, Johnson is going to be better than most people think.

I think we avg over 85 points per game last year and that’s with major injuries to Butler, Robinson, Carr and Krissa. We should easily avg that or more with no major injuries and our defense should be outstanding from day 1. I think most teams won’t be able to put 70 on us much less match us in the high 80’s scoring wise.

Jaland Lowe shoots 89% from the FT line, but only 27% from 3. Sounds like his shot isn't completely broken.
Lowe shot 35.2% on 2.7 attempts per game as a freshman. Shot 42% on NBA range 3's at the G-League combine. With better talent around him, the numbers from the perimeter will rise. Butler was 30% from the perimeter and show 39% last season.

Take aways from those stats:
Dioboute and Cam shot the 3 ball well last year. I will give the nod to Cam as a better shooter as he has better FT percentage. And I always felt that was the tell to identify a shooter.

Lowe doesn't have good shooting numbers across the board, except for FT, he's very solid there. That makes me think he was best player on team and forced to put up a lot of bad shots, his FG shooting % should improve..

Pope's system creates wide open catch and shoot threes, that's a much easier shot than the dribble into your shot type threes Lowe was taking at Pitt. The offensive phylosophies are night and day different.

We have a lot of players who can put the ball on the deck and attack the rim to draw fouls. With Lowe, Oweh, Aberdeen, Chandler, Jasper, Mo, Jayden, Jelavic and Kam I can see us getting deep into opposing teams bench for foul trouble in the second half. That should bode well for us as a deep team and decent ft shooting.
