Sounds like its down to Matthews and Willis for #8 in rotation

Late in game we need a scorer Willis late in game we need a defensive stop Mathews.

Matthews I hope. Just don't see Willis ever being a real contributor at a program like Kentucky. Hope I'm wrong though.

It's nice having a plethora of guys like Willis, Mulder, Hawkins, and Matthews. I like our bench. It doesn't possess the type of talent to compel Cal to play ten guys equal minutes, but it's solid enough to succeed in a pinch, and there's someone for every situational need.

I think the top seven will be Ulis, Briscoe, Murray, Lee, Skal, Poythress, and Matthews. I think the eighth guy will be either Humphries or Hawkins, depending on if we need a guard or a big man. Hope to see Willis contribute, but I think he will be the odd man out again this year (along with Mulder).

I think it's difficult to reach any conclusions after playing Ottawa.
They were really bad.
Willis did play pretty well but it was Ottawa.

I personally think Willis will win out because of his 3 point shooting.
It will almost definitely depend on the matchups.

Against some teams, Willis will make more sense as an 8th man. Against others, it will be Matthews or perhaps even Hawkins.

Yep situational is exactly right .

I thought it was really interesting we had 0 possessions of zone defense tonight. Cal hates zone with every fiber of his being. It's why a pre-season National Player of the year candidate in Wiltjer had to transfer because Cal refused to play Zone to hide his defense. And yet Cal already mentioned last month that in order for Humphries to play this year he would have to play Zone to hide his defense. I'll be interested to see if we work on any Zone in the next exhibition.

Willis can play.. He's pretty athletic and mobile.. He's also been in the system and practiced against some pretty good players over the past couple years. Matthews seems more like a Liggins than an MKG but I need to see him play more. Bottom line is the two are very different in style but both very serviceable back ups. We are very deep.

Why anyone would arbitrarily limit a rotation to 8 players just escapes me.
Agree. We may be guard heavy but there's no reason even a healthy Hawkins isn't counted on to come on and defend an opposing guard our young ones can't handle. I love our depth and we could be even deeper if Wynyard plays 2nd semester, though redshirting him may be Cal's choice.

Mathews is the 7th guy I expect at the moment with the contest for 8th being between Mulder, Willis, and Hawkins once healthy and in game shape.

Humphries is kind of stand alone and his time will depend more on foul trouble and match ups.

I believe it isn't particularly relevant as I think we end up playing 9 or 10 just in more of a rotation than a platoon substitution pattern but if it is 8 them Charles is pretty sure to be in that mix, I think he got underrated and is a higher level talent than he is getting credit for at the moment.

I think Lee, Matthews and Humphries will be the three off the bench (order dependent on need) and Mulder and Willis fight for the 9 spot. Humphries will have to spell Skal some. I just don't see a way around that.

Exactly what? The season starts in about 10 days and Cal said himself after the game that it was basically down to Willis and Matthews for the 8th spot in the rotation.
Willis is improved, a Jr. That has been in Cals system a while and is big at 6'9 and can shoot.
Some of you guys need to get a clue about Willis. Hes going to play important minutes this yr. Willis is athletic who can jump out of the gym and can throw down. He just needed confidence and guess what? he has that too now.

For those that said Mulder is 7th, that is false.
Look at the box and look at Willis' line compared to Mulder and Matthews and then drink a cup of coffee and WTFU.
I admit some bias toward Derek because I grew up in Bullitt Co. Ky where Willis played HS ball however...
Watch and see! Shepherdsville, Ky baby!

Not sure about order of play, but you have to play Willis if he plays like he has so far. Granted it's only been an exhibition game and the Blue-White game...but he's looked terrific so far.The guy has skills.

I'm not surprised, this is UK basketball and our fans are as Cal says crazy including me, but I don't think we can really conclude much given last night's opponent. Cal could have probably played the last 5 guys in the rotation and UK would have still won by 20. We all know what game it will be before we really start to get an idea of things. Fortunately it's only a couple of weeks away.

I agreed with a comment that this was not a good game to draw many conclusions about individual players. After reading your diatribe, I REALLY agree with that comment. I hope Willis has a good year. You need to back away from the "turkey" if you think it's possible to conclude that from such weak competition.

Some bias?

We do this every year Hood for the first 4 and Willis for the last 3. Here we are and you tell me it will be different this year. Everyone looks good against a Div 2 school you will see the cream rise once the competition does. Hell Hawkins has done far more to warrant playing time in front of Willis and hes from Kentucky.

LOL Matthews will be the first guy off the bench. Way to not understand anything at all OP LMAO , nevermind I see who the OP is. You gotta wonder if he thinks before he types such dumbass stuff?

Matthews is damn close to being a starter , as is lee. Then there is Humphries , then Willis , then Mulder and finally Hawkins . WE will play 8-9 for sure but Hawkins is the odd man out IMO.
