Doubt Skal was thinking about Duke tonight.

This was the season opener and we play another game before them.


Hess is a mess, and I thought he sat quite a bit as well, but he played 30 minutes.


He definitely needs to be more physical in the post and assert his will down there.

But as you stated, we have seen most of our bigs progress very well as the season goes on.

I think he will be fine.

Skal is going to be more than fine, he's going to be awesome. It's why I started this thread. He played timid tonight but he did some things that showed he has a high skill set. He just needs to find his rhythm. He knows he has trouble staying out of foul trouble so he's trying to play under control but there's a fine line between under control and timid. He will get it. I can't wait to see how he plays tomorrow night.

I agree he wasn't underwhelming , in his first game you should notice all the things he did well because freshman struggle to adapt . Anthony Davis took a few games to get comfortable . Anybody can point out the faults of a first game player , why anybody would expect more does show how people still haven't adapted to the Cal era . I saw a great template to work with tonight .

We do have to realize basically he didn't play last year, and he's clearly still adjusting to the intensity that goes with most any game UK plays. He looked awful tonight, just no other word comes to mind, but I do think we'll see a change as the season moves on. Cal made it very clear in that one sequence where we could clearly hear him tell him to start playing or sit his butt down. I don't think Skal will let that happen, but "eye-sack" Humphries as that one announcer called him will be waiting in the wings if he does.

I believe that was the same guy who said one throws it off the window not the glass, and takes it to the cup not the hole. Was the SECN so desperate to find someone to call a basketball game they had to borrow from the golf channel?

I saw nothing wrong with what the OP said. Skal went for 9 and 5 last night and he's a projected top 3 pick. Not surprising, being his first real college game. But a lot of skeptics (mostly UL or Kansas fans) would look at it and say "yeah he's overrated."

His point was Skal is going to get a lot better just like all the big men under Cal have done. You can disagree but still, I see no need for people to be a prick about it.

I don't think Boston was fishing, that's just the way he is. I've seen him do that same thing way too often for me to believe he was fishing. That's not his style.
Don't look for him to be around til about noon. He's going to be a bit hung over.

I don't get why people are so unwilling to admit that Skal is so highly rated by the NBA based on potential. He's not there yet. This is not unexpected and it is ok. If he is still producing results like last night in March, then there is reason for concern. Until then like all Cal teams, enjoy the ride. I suspect we will not see the "real" Skal for 3-4 years, much like AD or KAT.

Never have, never will. I don't feel the need to ignore anyone. Others choose to back off when Boston goes on one of his tirades but I'm like many others on here who have defended their posts when he pulls that crap. It's okay to disagree with ones opinion(s) but there's no reason to be insulting in the process.
My OP was dead on and very complimentary. It was meant to be a positive. If Boston wasn't a well known poster on here I would have reacted differently.
But his reply was that of someone who totally misunderstood the meaning of my post. It deserved the response I gave.

He might have been in a little awe last night. He did a couple things in the second half that showed us he has skills. So his feet are wet now, lets see what he does tonight and especially Tuesday night.
I also think Albany's packed in defense had something to do with his timidness too.

Yeah, Skal looking for his shot wasn't what was happening last night.

Got the ball wide open the first time he touched it about 15 feet away and passed up a shot. By the time January rolls around he won't be passing that up.

Obviously has to get stronger with the basketball. It's not fair to compare anybody to Davis but the one thing with Davis is you just didn't take the ball from him when he had it. Preternaturally strong hands. Skal isn't on that level yet.

What he brings is a similar kind of guard-like ability, and that's something you just don't see a lot in the college game with guys his size.

Anyways, point his he means no harm more than likely. It's just the tough outer surface he's showing. Don't take it personally.

I lived near Detroit for the last 15 years and now live near Cincinnati (which is nowhere near as brash as the other locations) so I know all about dealing with rude people and I'm VERY familiar with New England personalities but the things he said were out of line.

You do realize Cal has him under a "shoot or sit" order. He did the same thing to Towns last year. Towns struggled a couple of games. Then he started to walk faster, the shots started dropping and the rest is history.

Seriously, Skal is gonna shoot first, pass later till he starts converting. Look for him to do the same thing with Lee and Poythress.

And dadgumit, Lee needs to starts rubbing his hands on his socks before he shoots free throws.
