Congratulations to this year’s NBA scoring leader Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, for being a finalist for this year’s MVP of the NBA, along with Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo. This quote from ESPN is noteworthy, “The only question is whether Jokic…will finish first or Gilgeous-Alexander will earn his first MVP award.”

If SGA wins, he would be the first player from UK to win NBA MVP.

I’ll always appreciate his diligent work ethic and great attitude while at UK. He didn’t complain about starting the season as a backup, and took every opportunity to shine as an essential part of the team.

I hope SGA wins it. But Jokic is the MVP.

He averaged an historic triple double. When he is off the floor Denver is a below average team.

When SGA is off the floor OKC is still an above average team.

If you were starting an NBA team right now and could pick either one as your cornerstone player every GM in the league, except maybe Nico, would chose Jokic.

SGA should definitely be the MVP this year. He's the scoring leader, on the best team in the league who is the floor general and undeniable leader. OKC is also still very, very young, and they wouldn't be near nowhere near where they are without him. He would also be the first ever Cat to win the honors, which is pretty wild if you think about it.

His journey has been crazy, too. Who would have thought that the kid would get to this level. This just shows what hard work, dedication, and mastering your craft can get you. SGA was never the most physically gifted, nor the best shooter, but he's really mastered how to use his body and angles in order to get his shot any time he wants. Just shows that you don't have to be the fastest, the strongest, or jump the highest to be elite, (ie Jokic, Luka, and SGA).

Back to the MVP race, but I also that Luka deserved it last year. Jokic ended up getting the nod over him somehow. I hope the award isn't handed to him yet again.

Handed to him? Dude is top 3 in points, rebounds, and assists. That has never happened before in league history. He’s easily the best player in the world and it isn’t close. If you’re gonna go by the literal definition of value, then it has to be Jokic because his team falls apart without him.

SGA is equally deserving, but it won’t just be handed to Jokic. That sounds like the incredibly weak argument that Kendrick Perkins was making a few years ago.

Jokic is the best player in the world right now. It is what it is. People don’t like it because he just sees it as his job. He’s not arrogant, doesn’t even care about accolades. He just wants to win, then go home and see his horses. SGA is great but he shouldn’t win it because of voter fatigue.

That was how much I thought Luka deserved it last year. To each their own.

SGA will win it, and not taking anything away from him. Joker is head and shoulders the best player in the NBA right now. He finished the regular season top 3 in points, rebounds, and assist per game.

Shai deserves it. He’s the best player on the best team. He has the stats to support a mvp campaign. And he beat heads up the other player I deem as his only real competition in Jokic. So, we will see. If he wins, he will be the first Kentucky player ever to win.

Such a WILD stat that UK has never had an NBA MVP.

Well that's official now!!!

Jokic still had a better year. Happy for him regardless, I think it came down to who won that series ultimately.
I think the voters just get tired of the same guy winning it, watching a guy average a triple double can become old hat I guess... Jokic is still the best player in the league by all metrics but hey, we have a Cat as the MVP, can't complain too much :D

Calapari took 16 games to finally realize the SGA should be starting point guard. What a joke he was
He didn't play like that then. I was in Chicago and people were begging Cal to take SGA and put Greene in. Cal saw something in SGA before most did.

There is some truth to this. SGA’s superiority was not obvious to all. This was even the case among the sports media. Kevin Knox was considered a better player and prospect all the way to the draft by those who are paid to talk about the sport.

That’s very true. But I was at the SEC in St Louis too.

It was pretty obvious there that SGA was the man!!

The voting occurs before the playoffs
Well shhhhhhit. Then I fully disagree but I guess the fatigue hit. The off court on court stats alone would make me vote jokic, that stat is astonishing. And y'know averaging triple double doesn't hurt either.

Jokic probably should have won it.

But I’m glad SGA did.
