I always hoped, more than anything really, Cal and UK would separate on good terms. He had a special run from 2010-2015, and from 2015-2019 was very solid. But since 2019 the wheels have just fallen off.
It’s historically bad right now and these past two weeks have been unbelievably damning to his coaching reputation.
With his recent shots at the fans, his comments towards the administration during the offseason, his feud with Stoops, and now the national media really starting to shred his coaching decisions: you can just see this thing headed down a dark road.
I think it was important we finally have a smooth end to an era of a coach. It ended badly with Tubby (though we did make amends there), ended real bad with Gillispie (that was inevitable), and now it will seemingly end very very bad with Cal.
As much as I am ready for a change, it would really sting if he ends up taking another college job. I don’t even really know why, but it would.
I always hoped and thought Cal would retire and go on to help us with his communication / marketing skills. Kinda like how Jay Wright is doing games / analysis with CBS, or how K is doing his podcast now. That would have been huge for us.
But the way things are headed, I don’t see it. I see him leaving as an enemy or at least as someone bitter towards the program. And that really sucks. But ultimately, results are results and his fall from grace is on him.
