RIP Denny Crum

Gonna miss the Grand Slam breakfast. RIP restaurateur.

Upon retiring from coaching, Crum joined in an improbable partnership with former University of Kentucky head coach Joe B. Hall. The two coaching rivals hosted a sports talk radio show — “The Joe B. and Denny Show” — in Kentucky for almost 11 years. “I really loved this show,” Hall said on the morning of the show’s final day in 2014. “For 10 years and seven months, every morning I got up, I looked forward to it. It’s been this show that gets me out of my pajamas every morning.” Said Crum at the time: “Doing this show, it’s really been a lot of fun. No negatives to it, just a treat to do.

“I think this show created a lot of goodwill between Kentucky and Louisville.” Former UK head coach Joe B. Hall grabs some popcorn from former U of L head coach Denny Crum as they watch a state high school basketball tournament game at Rupp Arena in 2004. The one-time rivals co-hosted a sports talk radio show for almost 11 years together after retiring from coaching.

People who remembered their coaching days, when Hall and Crum used to trade pointed barbs over UK’s then-long-standing policy of not playing other in-state programs, were confounded. Yet not only were they co-hosts, it soon became apparent Hall and Crum were genuinely friends. They had long bonded over a mutual love of the outdoors, especially fishing.

Sad news for sure. I will never be a UofL sympathizer in sports but Denny Crum was a class act and a fierce competitor. The Commonwealth was lucky to have both Crum and Joe B.

Hopefully they are together again and resting well in the arms of the Father.

Prayers for Coach Crums family and friends. And prayers for the UofL fans that will miss him as well.

Would see him at old Louisville Downs harness track regularly.
Another link to my lifelong love of sports is gone. So few of them left
I am amazed every day when I think of the legends I have had the
chance to see play and coach various sports.

RIP and prayers to the family and followers of Louisville today. Always tough to lose someone special and for those of us who don't know them personally, part of our childhood and why we loved the sport. Nothing like growing up in Midwest and watching a Kentucky-Louisville game or Louisville-Memphis State when they were in the Metro Conference and we had limited viewing experiences. The McCray brothers. Milt Wagner. Lancaster Gordon. Jeff Hall. Billy Thompson, Kenny Payne. Darrell Griffith--my first true memory of Louisville was Dr. Dunkenstein--Pervis Ellison, etc..

One of my favorite games as a neutral observer was the Final Four Semifinal between Louisville and Houston in 1983. So entertaining and exciting.

Coach Crum was missed in coaching, now just missed.

He was a great coach & a total class act, on & off the court. One of the greatest basketball minds of my lifetime, who was truly an innovator. He was one of the first to embrace “small ball”, pressing with bigger guards & playing quick, athletic 6-8, 6-9 guys in the post, in the early 80s, which was an era dominated by big men.

And, as much as I hated those teams, at the time, there’s no denying that they were very fun to watch. They could really get up & down the floor & put the ball in the hole. His hair was perpetually on point, too, lol. I’m thankful that I got to grow up in that time & witness his coaching brilliance, firsthand. Nothing but respect for that man, from me.

Used to love listening to the Joe B and Denny Show. I called in a few times with some fishing talk. They were generous with the callers as you could talk forever with them and they'd let you ramble on. I'm getting old. The Legends of sports are in some of their final days.

Growing up and attending UK before we ever played UofL and not living in Jefferson County, I have never seen the Cards as hated rival. I realize those that are younger see them as a hated rival. I have always seen them as a "nothing to gain" school. But, I always had respect for Denny Crum and when he became best buds with Joe B. that solidified my respect for him. God bless him and his family.
