Reed Shepherd

He did look really good last night. He will have to watch the gambling and trying the back tap though against good teams. You can get away with that against lesser talent. I'll be really curious to see how this team stacks up when they go up against Kansas. I really like the look and make up of this team though.

I know we’ve had dynamic duos here under Cal, Murray/Ulis, Fox/Monk, Wall/Bled. but this may be the best collection of guards Cals ever had. I guess 2015, Book, Ulis, Harrisons were right there but Wagner, Dilly, Reeves, Reed, Edwards, damn.
Edwards is not a guard. The other 4 are excellent and will only get better.

John Calipari has never been one to heap unwarranted praise on the players, especially this time of year, but he made a very interesting statement after the game last night. He said that Reed might be the best on the ball defender he's ever coached. I want you to think about that statement and remember that this is the same man who coached Michael Kidd Gilchrist, DeAndre Liggins, Cason Wallace, De'Aron Fox, and Tyler Ulis.
Cal trying to win over the basketball Bennie's with that statement. I thought he said Reed had the best hands he ever seen or coached

I didnt even notice that 🤣 That's one of those if you aren't paying attention as you are typing you might miss. I know Im spelling it correctly, but I still went back and checked my posts to make sure I didn't do that as well.
I just accept that I'm not likely to ever get that spelling right. It's just not the way it seems to be correct in my head for whatever reason. I guess it's probably that I've known quite a few "Shepherds" in KY; and then you have Shepherdsville here in the state too. Nothing to worry about on a message board.

He's just a terrific all around player. I'm sure he'll have some freshman growing pains at some point in the season, but man he is a cool customer, sees the floor well, has a knack for rebounding, shoots it well, and is a lot more athletic than many on this board would admit. Trying to come up with a comp for him, and the best I could do was Herro in the Cal era. Maybe Kyle Macy going back to my college days.

Doubt it was for the Bennies. They only think jacking threes. Never any thought to defense. My guess is Reed actually played defense out of high school. That would freak Cal out because it hasn’t happened in over 8 years.

I think Reed is the type of player that most were thinking and hoping that C J Fredrick was going to be for us. Unfortunately, it didn't work out for Fredrick, but he played hard. Best of luck to him in Cincy.
Reed is ready to go ... he is clearly a plug-and-play guy !!
He is steady, heady and solid ... reminds me of Ulis' play.

That clearly should be taken with a grain of salt. We had Cason playing just last year, and he's already gaining recognition for defending in the NBA.

Idk these kids are different after COVID.I think we still seeing effects culturally. We had been on a slippery slope pre COVID
Maybe so or not. But AAU hasn’t taught defense, passing, moving without the ball and other such skills since LONG before COVID was a gleam in the eye of Chinese scientists. The AAU plays pretend NBA for two reasons. One, halfassed coaches are wanting to attract athletic talent so they look good and they get no benefit whatsoever if that talent is skilled. Two, they try to make it “fun” and the children like jacking threes and dunking.

Edwards is a wing but he plays like a guard and I consider him a guard when we go Wagner, Dilly and Reeves with Mitchell or Thiero
one thing I would like to see against Tamcu is Edwards to's be only one. Im not sure how comfy I am with Edwards bringing the ball up under pressure or running anything in the haft court

Reed seems like he's going to be the kind of player who you want to put the ball in his hands in late game and crunch time situations. He doesn't seem to get rattled easily or force things. He let's the game come to him, he has great court vision and awareness, and doesn't make a lot of mistakes. He's going to be hard to keep off the floor. I feel like in crunch time, he will be able to either make clutch shots or make a smart play to get the right people the ball.

Here's my take on Reed.

He's Jeff Sheppard's son and he has been around Kentucky basketball all of his life. This allows for the "aura" of Kentucky as a Kentucky boy to not be too big of a moment for him. This spotlight isn't too big for Reed. On top of that he's a highly intelligent player.
Don’t forget his mom was a very good player also.
