Reed Shepherd

Here's my take on Reed.

He's Jeff Sheppard's son and he has been around Kentucky basketball all of his life. This allows for the "aura" of Kentucky as a Kentucky boy to not be too big of a moment for him. This spotlight isn't too big for Reed. On top of that he's a highly intelligent player.

He is also a Ky kid who grew up loving UK basketball. Those kids play for the name on the jersey and pride of Uk basketball as well.

I love all our guard's, oh biy we so lucky. We can have 3 different looks at the one.

Rob's speed and agility gives us something special at guard. The way he moves left,to right or any direction is exciting to see. Toughness, the kid has it in spades. You guys seen the way he ran through NW big. He's a bulldog on D. The way he gets in the guys face.

Dj is quicker than I thought. Plays with intensity every minute He can use his strength and quickness to go anywhere..

Reed Born! too wear blue, the legacy continues. Man its going to be fun watching Shep. On D hr like a ninja. When he runs the point its with thought and control, plays like a grand master.

All 3 are able to rin the team imo. Its an advantage or could be. Can't wait to see Kansas.A real test for our guys.

John Calipari has never been one to heap unwarranted praise on the players, especially this time of year, but he made a very interesting statement after the game last night. He said that Reed might be the best on the ball defender he's ever coached. I want you to think about that statement and remember that this is the same man who coached Michael Kidd Gilchrist, DeAndre Liggins, Cason Wallace, De'Aron Fox, and Tyler Ulis.

That's what stood out to me last night: we have a bunch of dudes who can pressure the hell outta the ball out front. When we get our rim protection back, this defense is going to be lethal.

He has a calm demeanor about him in all aspects. He’s like that on the golf course too .

Not to take away from Reed's excellent game play, but Dillingham looked very good to me. Mitchell and Wagner played well except their bad shooting from the 3
Last night was my first time seeing the team . Dillingham looks to me like he is just scratching the surface of what he can and eventually will be . He’s going to have some “what the heck ? “ moments but he’s going to have plenty of “Did you see that !” moments .

On offense, I like Sheppard's poise when someone is close guarding him, and on defense, although he doesn't have blazing foot speed, he usually directs the guy who's getting past him to another defender. He knows where help is supposed to be.

Tangent: a staple before this game was Sheppard passing to an open Mitchell for a score. The cat is out of the bag about Mitchell's shooting. and last night he was guarded much more attentively.

You just never know how a Kentucky boy will play early at UK. The pressure is huge! Seems like he's handling it well. He's very talented and he's gonna have to be a little more precise on a couple of the circus passes (which were insanely good, but just slightly off the mark). It's early though and this team is still getting used to each other's presence on the court. That's all those slight miscues were.

Reed is gonna have a couple of games where we scratch our heads I'm sure. He's very good. Might be the best player on the team right now, but that's tricky to say at the moment, since all our guys seems to be very solid and well rounded. We have some BASKETBALL players at last. DJ, Reed, Rob-- all good handlers. I ALMOST don't want to add a big. But we need the size.

It's good to have dudes again. It makes watching our games more fun and less stressful. Even when we were struggling in the first half, it wasn't bad play. Just had an off shooting half.

We will take some lumps in the SEC though. Very deep and experienced league. Arky will give us some trouble. UT as well. But I think we are the better team over all.

Yep. Good news is, with Mitchell haing a good outside shot, that's going to open up the lane. As our shooting got better last night, NMST had to come out from the lane (which they were packing 4 deep in the first half). And when that happened, Dilly and DJ took over. Reed too (which his strength is those outside jumpers which keeps a defense honest).

i LIKE my team.

He is cool, calm and collected, having been around Kentucky and its history. He is talented enough to be a solid contributor from Day 1 and is mature enough to enjoy every bit of the college experience, on and off the court. Most impressive to me is his apparent commitment to the team concept and doing everything he can to help the program be successful, having fun in the process. He knows he only gets to experience this college thing once, so he wants to do it right and 100% in every way !!

Yeah he doesn’t usually do that and it’s good he notices because that will get him the most time. The thing that sticks out to me about Reed is how complete of a player he is. Those guys win a lot of games. Honestly reminds me of the great Villanova teams who’s guards did everything well.

Did Dane Bradshaw say on the broadcast last night that he played against Jeff Shepherd? That isn't correct, is it? Anyway, I think he also said the father was a better athlete, but the son is a better shooter. Agree or disagree?

If we're talking about bounciness and jumping ability (and maybe speed without the ball), then I think that's easy to see. The shooting, however, is yet to be proven. The father was a good perimeter shooter, after all. But I do think Reed's shot looks smoother (best word I can come up with to describe it) and has the potential to be a little better - although Jeff Shepherd could jump over people to get his shot off.

I absolutely LOVE this kid. When I watch him play I am immediately reminded of several former UK greats from back in the day, to include his father and Kyle Macy, among others. Reed Sheppard is the kind of gritty, old school guy I've wanted to see in a UK jersey for a long, long time. Reed Sheppard embodies excellence and UK tradition!
